77 BOA DRUM (Boredoms)

...

On 07/07/07 at 7:07pm, Japanese group Boredoms, orchestrated a performance by 77 drummers at Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, NYC.  Hisham Akira Bharoocha put out an email inviting drummers to apply for a place in the performance and out of the 3000 replies, 77 were chosen, including Andrew WK (drummer no 57), David Grubbs (drummer no 23) and Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale (drummer no 77).  The players were positioned in a spiral that trailed from a circular stage where the principal Boredoms members – Yozoro (drummer no 1), Yoshimi (drummer no 2), Sen (drummer no 3) were situated together with Eye (0) playing electronics, a seven-necked guitar and conducting the ensemble.  This is the screening of Jun Kawaguchi’s simply shot but effective documentary of the performance, complete with behind the scenes rehearsal footage, interviews, and, of course, lots of footage of the performance itself.  Come and experience the power of this momentous musical landmark.

There are also a series of shorts from the Thrill Jockey discography, which will feature new videos from Pontiak, Future Islands, Oval, Imbogodom and Dustin Wong.

Barn Owl

...

Evan Caminiti (guitars, vocals) and Jon Porras (guitars, vocals, drums, harmonium) met in San Francisco in 2006 and immediately started playing music together. Over the next four years, the two gradually sculpted a vast collection of hazy desert sky meditations – ominous, barren expanses of music for desert walks at dusk, and dark, pastoral passages embellished with psychedelic and atmospheric wash. Engaging throughout, every moment contributes to an overall feeling of mysterious desert expanse and a sonic narrative that unfurls like a cinematic metaphysical western.

Several releases on labels such as Thrill Jockey, Root Strata, Digitalis, Not Not Fun, Blackest Rainbow and Important Records.

Barn Owl will be performing a special AV set for Supersonic 2010  – John Davis will be contributing Super 8 films to the set. See his work here –

Friday nights at Supersonic wouldn’t be the same without PCM. Currently celebrating their 20th anniversary, this duo have been at the heart of the Birmingham electronic/dance music scene for many years but have managed to keep their music and ethos resolutely underground and “in yer face”.
Sharing bills with acts as diverse as Aphex Twin, Test Dept, Scorn, Luke Vibert and even Hawkwind (!), PCM draw from their wide-ranging influences from metal to Krautrock, 60’s psychedelia to old skool hardcore to create a whirlwind of sound that ignites any dancefloor turning it into a steaming mosh-pit.
Previous Supersonic appearances have seen exclusive collaborations with legendary metal vocalist Karl Willetts from Bolt Thrower and guitarist Steve Pike amongst others; all adding to their unique take on Drum & Bass/electronica for the 21st century.
By combining nitrous-fuelled beats and filthy subsonic basslines with alien soundscapes and horror movie unease, PCM continue Birmingham’s heritage of producing dark, heavy music but with their eyes firmly on the dancefloor.

“Painfully young and unnervingly talented” American multi instrumentalist Peter Broderick explores minimalism and instrumentalism with tinges of folk.  In mid 2007, Peter was invited by some of his heroes, the Danish ensemble Efterklang, to move to Copenhagen and join their live band. And so he dropped his entire life in Portland and moved across the world. Since then, he has also released a series of solo albums including ‘Docile’, a mini album of piano music and an album of string compositions.

King Midas Sound

...

The roots of King Midas Sound were planted when Kevin Martin, industrial dance veteran and the brain behind experimental dancehall project The Bug, set about collecting together vocalists for his 2008 album, London Zoo. Where The Bug had a hard carapace, firmed up with industrial beats and dubstep bass, King Midas Sound more resembles a phantom presence: a ghostly fog of sound that seeps through air vents and creeps through cracks in window panes. Heavy with urban dread but awake to the promise of a better life.

Their distorted and often claustrophobic sound, created using found sound and circuit bent instruments was first debuted on the London based Werk Discs, with their output drawing comparison to not only modern bass music but to the darker sounds of noise and industrial.

This solo DJ set by SteveCloaks will see the 3by3 label boss in a Dub-selector style, playing strictly Cloaks material only, in an exclusive performance for Supersonic 2010.

Factory Floor

Everyone is raving about this London based band, you’ll find their brutal live performance stretches from dark, post-punk electronics to astute, industrial-strength minimal techno. willfully despondent female vocal and a slavering, primitive arpeggiator, gelling the two together with an eruptive frenzy of drums. It’s an interesting take on disaffected, cold-wave minimalism – something that seems to be in the air at the moment.

Khyam Allami & Master Musicians of Bukkake present: Bosphorean

...

Master Musicians of Bukkake and Khyam Allami are excited and pleased to bring to the stage a very special collaboration debuting at this year’s Supersonic Festival, Bosphorean. Taking its name from the Bosphorus Straight that divides East and West, Europe and Asia, Bosphorean is steeped in exploring the musical schisms and mythology of the divide. Bosphorean will encompass the psyched out bliss and sonic spectacle of Master Musicians of Bukkake with the sublime Oud playing of Iraqi musician Khyam Allami. Expect forays into Turkish influenced fuzz rock, Desert motorik pulsations and the subtlety of Eastern tinged psyche folk. Khyam’s Oud teamed with the 7 piece out rock unit of Master Musicians of Bukkake. This will be a very special performance that should not be missed! This performance will feature original music composed by both elements of the collaboration and one original piece composed for the group by Seattle Composer and Persian vocalist Jessika Kenney.

Brothers Caleb and Ashton Bird grew up in the woods of Southern Illinois where they first started making loud, heavy music together as young boys and they haven’t stopped since.

Their latest musical partnership called TWEAK BIRD is a band driven by big drums, fuzzed out baritone guitar and tandem spacey vocal melodies. The sound is a swirl of catchy and raw stoner-pop bits that are spliced, blended and expanded upon with unique sections of instrumentation including saxophone, flute, theremin, and even some gong for good measure. But don’t expect any typical lengthy progressive jams with these guys, they make quick work of their arrangements and leave surprises around every corner. They are both brutal and subtle so keep your ears sharp and have fun!

Spectre founded Drumcorps to synthesize the unlikely mix of electronic music production values and the raw power of American hardcore. Drumcorps shows are notoriously high-energy, cathartic affairs.

The legendary German group NEU! released only 3 albums between 1972 and 1975, but these albums had an influence wildly disproportionate to their modest commercial success. Inspired by revisiting these recordings, Michael Rother has invited a group of musicians to visit the NEU! universe with him for a series of live performances: Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Benjamin Curtis (School of Seven Bells), and Aaron Mullan (Tall Firs) will perform a limited number of concerts this year as ‘Hallogallo 2010’. This group will perform NEU!  music and selections from Rother’s work with Harmonia and his solo albums.
