Small But Hard is a new independent label, set up by breakcore maverick DJ Scotch Egg (AKA Shigeru Ishihara) in conjunction with artist/print-maker Simon Fowler (co-founder of London based Cataract Press) and Daisuke Imamura (DJ Die Soon). The label has quickly amassed several very interesting artists, who are all quite distinct in terms of sound but united in their tireless dedication to pushing the boundaries of electronic music. Supersonic is honoured to present the whole Small But Hard family this year, so let’s take a look at what this showcase has in store…

DJ Scotch Bonnet

Scotch Egg is somewhat of a Supersonic veteran by now, but in case you’ve missed out on any of his previous manic performances, here’s a little taster of what you can expect. Scotch has been pioneering his frantic ADD chiptune/gabba mash ups for almost 10 years now, often using a circuit bent Game Boy to unleash all manner of breakcore upon his unsuspecting audiences. This time round he’ll be performing under the name DJ Scotch Bonnet (one of his many guises), stepping outside of his self-imposed 8-bit cage to supply us with his trademark cut-up beats and massively overdriven bass bombs – a potent combination that’s sure to get you moving!

Devilman

With DJ Scotch Egg taking control of an arsenal of skull rattling bass frequencies (anchored in place by Dokkebi Q’s Gorgonn’s live mixing and Bo Ningen’s Taigen Kawabe’s inimitable vocals, whilst under the supervision of the enigmatic Mr. D), Devilman sounds like dubstep turned inside out and inflated to cartoonishly gigantic proportions. This isn’t the first time Devilman have appeared at the festival – their larger-than-life bass blowout in 2010 reduced all in attendance to gleeful, quivering wrecks, hypnotised by the bowel rupturingly heavy low frequencies and gyrating in ecstatic devotion. Not to be missed!

Koyxeи

Koyxeи‘s obtuse take on hip-hop is unparalleled, bringing in dub and breakbeat influences and draping them in an exceptionally noisy and hyperactive dressing. Koyxeи (or Kouhei Matsunaga as he’s known to his friends) has worked with a number of prominent experimental musicians, including Autechre, Tangerine Dream’s Conrad Schnitzler and Merzbow (who will also be appearing at this year’s festival), and it seems the influence of these seemingly disparate artists has rubbed off on Matsunaga, whose eclectic sounds know no boundaries.

C_C

C_C finds Kouhei Matsunaga teaming up with jungle enthusiast Eduardo Ribuyo to indulge their love of handmade beats and analogue feedback loops. C_C performances are largely improvised, with the duo conjuring vast textures out of heavily manipulated source sounds, filling the room like liquid and syphoning into your ears like thick treacle. Fans of electronic music will certainly want to check these guys out!

Kakawaka

Berlin based noisemonger Kakawaka has been causing quite a stir of late with his expressive, volatile live shows, bringing together harsh noise & performance art, and sound experiments & outlandish tomfoolery in his own unique style. We’re not entirely sure what Kakawaka has in store for his Supersonic performance, but it’s sure to be a wild, spontaneous spectacle that you won’t forget in a hurry!

This walking tour is now fully booked and we have no places left – it was massively oversubscribed. We’ll have lots more activities for you to get involved with during the weekend of Supersonic – to be announced in the next couple of weeks so watch this space. Cash points
There are only a few cash points machines in Digbeth, so you might want to take out money prior to arriving at the festival site. Particularly as our lovely Marketplace is back for another year, with Supersonic merch, band merch and stalls from a whole host of independent labels and distributors including Holy Roar, Cold Spring and altvinyl. There’ll also be a stall from the Birmingham Zine Festival as well as the Tea Room serving a delicious selection of cakes.

Food + Drink
This year we are running Supersonic bars at each stage. On sale will be Purity ales, Hogan cider and lager as well as The Kraken Rum, wines and soft drinks. There will also be tasty food available from Soul Food Project, Pika Pika Japanese food, Squisito Italian deli and more – suitable for vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters alike. (please note you are not permitted to bring your own alcohol on site)

Extra Treats
Artist Sam Underwood has recently installed his Sonic Graffiti project across Digbeth and he will be giving tour of the piece to Supersonic attendees over the weekend. Meet Sam outside VIVID http://www.vivid.org.uk/ on Friday 8pm and Sunday 8pm to plug yourself into the city.

As well as the music and film programme there are installations and exhibitions to keep you busy over the weekend. Grindcore: Cut n Paste, SOUNDkitchen: Cinema for the Ears () and Conny Prantera’s audiovisual installation will all be situated in Zellig, Custard Factory on Saturday and Sunday. The spaces will be open 12-8pm so you can come and check out these exciting works before the music programme begins.

Think you know your Electric Funeral from your Electric Wizard? Well put your music trivia knowledge to the test with Club Unlikely infamous QUIZ. It’s free to enter, just come on down to bar 70eights on Sunday 23rd and register your team by 2.15pm – exciting prizes!

Kids Gigs
There are still spaces available for families to join in with the Supersonic Kids Gigs, big sounds for little people. Two special performances will be taking place at the mac, introducing little ones to experimental sounds. On Saturday 22nd families can catch Lucky Dragons and on Sunday 23rd, The Berg Sans Nipple will bring their nimble fingered electronica wizardry. Tickets can be bought directly from mac.

Birmingham Improvisers Orchestra directed by Mike Hurley

BIO aims to create a focus for creative music making in Birmingham and the wider Midlands area.  It will be made up of musicians who are concerned with improvisation regardless of their particular chosen area of musical activity.  Although at the heart of its activities will always be improvisation it will also seek to encourage composition initially at least in the form of BIO-Activities provided by members of the group and a pool of pre-existing classics.  It will also seek to generate creative partnerships with like minded people from across a broad range of disciplines whether they be musical or from art forms.

Lucky Dragons and The Berg Sans Nipple to play Kids Gigs at Supersonic 2011

It’s hard to imagine to two more perfect bands to play our Supersonic Kids Gigs than Lucky Dragons and The Berg Sans Nipple.  These will rule!   If everyone isn’t running around clapping and smiling in five minutes, we’ll need to think about refunds.

Lucky Dragons are all about people coming together to make sound, to make an event, to make something new and joyous.  It’s not by accident that they refer to their live shows as ‘actions’.  They encourage participation and this Supersonic live show promises to be all about (re)discovery and (re)turning to play to learn about ourselves and make new connections.  There’s a live video link below and more Lucky Dragons live films are here.

The Berg Sans Nipple are a Frenchman and a Nebraskan.  With two drums, synths, samples, a ton of percussion and vocals, their sounds hop-skip past each other, caught in devastatingly beautiful melodies held tight by a mind bending rhythm section.  Their new video ‘Changing the Shape’ (link below) is a fantastic twist on the age-old game of exquisite corpse where an image or story is built up person-by-person using instinct and imagination.  Let’s play!

For the last day of our film programme week, we spoke to Dan Paolantonio from the DIY film collective Imperfect Cinema to get the low-down on what to expect at Supersonic 2011.

1. Which five words describe what you know about Supersonic?
Eclectic, adventurous, surprising, engaging, cake!

2. What can people expect of Imperfect Cinema at the festival?
A combustible collision of DIY punk ethics and car boot sale film cameras! We hope that our  event will not only inspire new context for endangered imaging technologies, but also a form a unique audio-visual documentation of Supersonic,  founded in collaboration, and the creative risk of improvised performance! We are absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with Sound Kitchen this year & to continuing Imperfect Cinema’s close working relationship with the inimitable Nicholas Bullen!

3. Why do you explore filmmaking as a medium – what does it do for you that nothing else does?
This is of course the burning question and one which I feel has a real relevance to our appearance at Supersonic this year! Filmmaking for me is actually very much a musical experience, in that it conjures those feelings that I am only otherwise able to experience when listening to music (and as I play the guitar with all the grace & dexterity of a chimp wearing boxing gloves, everyone should actually be incredibly relieved that i am most often found behind a camera rather than in front of a Marshall stack!).

4. Who or what else on the bill are you hoping to see?  (And why?)
Where do I start! Barn Owl for their expansive sonic vistas, Wolves in The Throne Room for their unique blend of grim meets green, Drunk in Hell for their single riff bludgeoning, Scorn for that singular low-end, Mike Watt because the old punk in me needs to get over Minutemen, Ore out of sheer curiosity, Silver Apples because I never thought I ever would, and of course Backwards (if only to confirm that this experience will be as utterly dreadful as Nic Bullen’s boasts!).

5. Finally, your essential ‘surviving-Supersonic’ items are…
An open mind, earplugs, optrex, funds for cake, and a calm & discerning eye when considering everything on offer this year!

Cloaks Q&A #11
On the 3by3 label, Cloaks play speaker-shredding blasts of dubstep noise.  Beats skip, jump and judder while all manner of found sounds build up into layers of ambient scree.  Cloaks’ music is a harsh listen but all the more devastating and exciting for that.  Here, mainman Steve Harris answers our Q&A.

1. Which five words describe what you know about Supersonic?
Important, unique, raw, adult, anti-hype (substance)

2. What can people expect of Cloaks at the festival?
You should expect to hear a more experimental, noise-driven approach to our music. We will also be predominantly playing unheard material from our album in progress.

3. Why make music – what does it do for you that nothing else does?
That’s a great question, and one I couldn’t ever answer sufficiently.

4. Who else on the bill are you hoping to see?  (And why?)
Part Chimp, Alva Noto, Scorn, White Hills, The Skull Defekts. Supersonic always has a culture of ‘new’ as well so the point of it for me in terms of seeing other acts is all the names I’ve never heard of. The chief reason the festival is so great is that you discover new things so I’m looking forward to being pleasantly surprised.

5. Finally, your essential ‘surviving-Supersonic’ items are…
Earplugs, a large supply of disposable income for the marketplace, promo materials to hand out, spare bag to store all the new stuff you just bought, spare earplugs.

Current 93 – recent live show available for free download

David Tibet of Current 93 is performing at Supersonic 2011 as part of Zu93, a collaboration with the Italian death-jazz outfit Zu.  Current 93 performed early in August at OFF Festival in Katowice, Poland and the entire set has been made available for a Tibet-authorised free download by Hennessy Williams.  Just follow the link to the Current 93 site Coptic Cat below.

SUPERSONIC Q&A no. 8: SLABDRAGGER

The eighth in our series of Supersonic Q&As, introducing you to the artists playing in 2011 and giving you an insight into their world.  Today, hailing from London, a little known treasure named Slabdragger.  A band who sing about epic quests to Nepal to find killer weed, rubbish Roman Centurions, battling huge Octopian creatures and drinking rum.  They also feature the one and only Sam Thredder (Dead Swans, More Than Life, Last Witness, Throats).  And, as their label Holy Roar says, they’re sludge as.  Answers courtesy of bass player Yusuf Tary.

1. Which five words describe what you know about Supersonic?
THIS IS SOME HEAVY SHIT.

2. What can people expect of Slabdragger at the festival?
A lot of massive, driving, noisy riffs that your mum would not like very much.

3. Why make music – what does it do for you that nothing else does?
It takes away the pressures of the ‘life competition’ that we all seem to be involved in. Music seems to be the one thing in our existence that is not (or shouldn’t) be competitive because everything else seems to be. People are generally so wrapped up in what their job title is, how much money they’re earning, what car they have blah blah blah. Our music, for us, transcends all that….. and we get to shout a lot.

4. Who else on the bill are you hoping to see?  (And why?)
I for one am looking forward to Electric Wizard as I’ve seen them before and they were amazing. I would also like to see Zombi as they have a real interesting sound.

5. Finally, your essential ‘surviving-Supersonic’ items are…
It’s probably going to be fucking freezing in Birmingham so warm clothes and lots and lots of BEER.

SUPERSONIC Q&As no. 3: NATHAN BELL

For our third Supersonic artist Q&A, we present – from Baltimore, USA – Nathan Osmodius Bell.  Bell plays astounding, cyclical banjo pieces making creative use of delay and bowing techniques.  His music is sometimes sparse, sometimes urgent, but always inventive and the current album ‘Colors‘ on Lancashire & Somerset Records is as good a place as any to enter his world.  Bell was also the bass player in Lungfish and has a duo called Human Bell with Dave Heumann from Arboretum.  Clever name, clever musician.

1. Which five words describe what you know about Supersonic?
Five times speed of sound.

2. What can people expect of you at the festival?
The channeling of music five times the sound of speed, a one man band with the help of a few others, jamming out cosmic rhythms, in a string ensemble crafting poignant melodic scores, elevating and resonating deep in internal tunes. A church of the metaphysical “Tall Praises High Spirit band.

3. Why make music – what does it do for you that nothing else does?
Because music is a gift and to truly appreciate this gift then one should be able to submit, to channel it thru. music is medicine, medicine is music. Soul food for the brain. It closes two eyes to open the third.

4. Who else on the bill are you hoping to see?
Bardo Pond, Skull Defekts.

5. Finally, your essential ‘surviving-Supersonic’ items are…
One banjo, guitar, drums, harmonica, a prayer and a praise for the music.

We’re very excited to announce that electronica pioneers Alva Noto and Byetone will be playing at this year’s Supersonic Festival. Two wizards of  experimental audio visual performance, the German artists will be playing at the festival as part of their 15 year anniversary tour. Alva Noto makes rhythms and harmonies using clicks and glitches and is also known for his work with Ryoji Ikeda. Byetone, aka Olaf Benders is the label boss of Raster Noton record label and as Byetone manipulates abstract animations in realtime to support abstract, complex pieces of music that mange to be  danceable at the same time.

Also joining the bill this year is Cut Hands, aka William Bennett of Whitehouse, and his afro noise project. Alexander Tucker will be presenting an intimate performance of his new record of minimalist string arrangements and electronic manipulations and The Berg Sans Nipple will bring their incredible live show to the festival.  Part Chimp, legendary for the volume of their live hows will bring their noise rock to the stage, along with psych sleazers Teeth of the Sea, Sabbath worshippers Slabdragger and Nottingham’s finest, Kogumaza.

As ever, we like you to get you involved in the festival too, a bit of audience participation never goes amiss and we’re pleased to announce an exciting workshop from Supersonic friend John Richards. After the success of his Dirty Electronics Ensemble in 2009, he’ll back with a new noise making workshop, Mute Synth,  where participants can also show off their hard work with a live performance at the festival.

We’re also very pleased to announce the return of Supersonic Kids Gigs – big sounds for little people. Lucky Dragons, as well as performing at the main festival site for us grown ups, will be doing a special performance for children and their families.

Hello folks. My name’s David and I’m the Marketing intern for Supersonic 2011. I’m based in Manchester so I have the dubious pleasure of getting to know the M6 in intimate detail over the next few months. One of my first jobs has been to put together a Spotify playlist for artists performing at this year’s festival. It’s been great to check out some fantastic acts – hope you enjoy listening. We’ve asked a few regular visitors to Supersonic to highlight what they’re most looking forward to at this years festival, to help guide you through our program. First up is Spencer Hickman of Rough Trade East fame, this is what he’s giving the thumbs up to:

Factory Floor
FF will be an absolute highlight of ss10 I can guarantee it. There is no other band in the UK that is exciting me as much as they are , here at Rough Trade we have watched them evolve from a very good post punk band into one of the most incredible electronic bands around. it’s dark, oppressive yet danceable and accessible , i guess a  lazy comparison would be ‘Throbbing Gristle,Cabaret Voltaire shot through with a slice of Weatherall produced Fuck Buttons’. yes they are that good. get excited now.

Swans
Who doesn’t want to see the Swans doing what they do best ? Being moody and unsettling in equal amounts. Although this isn’t an industrial return to their terror inducing early material it is far and away the most aggressive I have heard them sound in a very long time , it also has the songs to back it up this should be very special indeed.

Cloaks
I remember taking the Cloaks record to SS09 to sell on our stall, it was one of those records we had sold a lot of in store but outside of that I had heard little about them, we sold all ten copies by the time the second track had finished, there is no better recommendation than that in my mind. They sound like Skinny Puppy making dubstep , it’s dark, brutal and unforgiving. Oh it’s also very f*cking good, and very f*cking loud.

Peter Broderick
It doesn’t matter if he is being all weird and experimental or creating finely crafted songs ala the ‘home’ record, he is always engaging and blessed with a truly beautiful voice. I have no idea what he will be doing at this years festival but I do know I’ll be watching.

Godflesh
What can you say ? Brummie legends, back when they were releasing records they were way ahead of their time having given us a few years to catch up with them they are back to reclaim  their crown and destroy SS and our ears in the process. very exciting.

Rough Tade will have a stall in our market place this year so make sure you save all your pennies cause they’re bring a whole heap of treats!

On 07/07/07 at 7:07pm, Japanese group Boredoms, orchestrated a performance by 77 drummers at Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, NYC.  Hisham Akira Bharoocha put out an email inviting drummers to apply for a place in the performance and out of the 3000 replies, 77 were chosen, including Andrew WK (drummer no 57), David Grubbs (drummer no 23) and Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale (drummer no 77).  The players were positioned in a spiral that trailed from a circular stage where the principal Boredoms members – Yozoro (drummer no 1), Yoshimi (drummer no 2), Sen (drummer no 3) were situated together with Eye (0) playing electronics, a seven-necked guitar and conducting the ensemble.  This is the screening of Jun Kawaguchi’s simply shot but effective documentary of the performance, complete with behind the scenes rehearsal footage, interviews, and, of course, lots of footage of the performance itself.  Come and experience the power of this momentous musical landmark.

When: 2pm, SATURDAY, 23rd October

Cost: Free to weekend ticket holders plus £10 contribution to materials, each participant will get a Supersonic Noise Box Kit, for you to make and keep. You will need to bring your own thing to house it in(see details further on)

What: A 3hr workshop led by sound artist and performer mr.underwood aka Glatze to build a 3 oscillator screaming, light-controlled Noise Box. Each participant will build and take home their Noise Box. This will be based on the unit shown in the demo video, with a few nice tweaks and additions to make it even cooler!

What is the Noise Box?:
A sci-fi electronic drone instrument whose pitch is controlled with gesture.  The frequency of the sound output by each of the three oscillators in this Optical Theremin is determined by the intensity of the light falling on each sensor. Vary the light using your hands or by shining a light directly onto the unit . Use just one oscillator for a more playable instrument, or all three at once for a noisy cacophony of sound!

Suitable for: All skill levels. Complete beginners welcome – we’ll teach you how to solder etc. Mr.Underwood and his team will assist you throughout the build of your 3 oscillator Supersonic Noise Box.
