Castle & Falcon, Birmingham

We’re very excited to host the experimental sludge metal force SUMAC, a project that brings together three musicians whose combined work spans the outer reaches of metal, noise, and free-form improvisation. Known for their crushing heaviness, SUMAC operate at the intersection of visceral power and fearless experimentation.
Guitarist and vocalist Aaron Turner, a central figure in modern heavy music, is best known for his work with the seminal post-metal band Isis and as a member of Supersonic Festival alumni Old Man Gloom. Brian Cook, whose résumé includes Botch, Russian Circles, and These Arms Are Snakes, anchors SUMAC with a formidable low end, while drummer Nick Yacyshyn (formerly of Baptists) propels the band with relentless energy and dynamic precision.
Support comes from death doom metal band Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean. Based out of Massachusetts known for extreme volume and unrelenting live shows. Chained has toured the US and Canada both headlining shows and supporting bands including: Sumac, The World is a Beautiful Place, The Acacia Strain, Indian, Undeath, Mizmor, and Soulfly. Their most recent album Sisyphean Cruelty was released in October to critical acclaim; Invisible Oranges described the band “As caustic as they are pessimistic.”
