Rún are an Irish band whose sound is rooted in folk tradition but deeply exploratory and atmospheric. Their music fuses choral and traditional Irish song with immersive field recordings, improvisation, and textured sonic layering.
Vocalist and instrumentalist Tara Baoth Mooney (aka The Clumsy Giantess) brings a background in Irish folk, choral music, and experimental sound design, shaping a vocal presence that is both ancient and otherworldly. Multi-instrumentalist Diarmuid MacDiarmada (brother of Lankum’s Cormac) adds avant-garde sensibilities, drawing on decades of experience in Ireland’s experimental music scene. Their sound is informed by ritual, dreams, and uncanny synchronicities, channeling influences from Coil to Pauline Oliveros. Drummer and sound designer Rian Trench captures this spacious, emotionally rich world using analog tape and intentionally “damaged” textures that evoke memory and distance. Together, Rún creates a haunting, expansive listening experience – an ever-shifting place of experimentation, intuition, and sonic myth-making. Their debut album will be coming out via Rocket Recordings in advance of the festival.
