We’ve partnered with Whatever Pays the Rent to offer a rare chance to see this gothic drama from the Czechoslovakian New Wave director Juraj Herz (The Cremator).
Morgiana (1972) follows the lives of two sisters (both played by the same actress) mourning their late father’s death in a majestic, baroque mansion. Jealous of her inheritance one sister plots to kill the other. Stylish and uniquely shot expect tarot, poison, blackmail and even scenes filmed from the point of view of their pet cat.
Each ticket comes with a zine with more context around the film as well as other musings on womxn on the edge of the horror genre.
Before the screening join artist Bunny Bissoux for a Womxn in Horror ‘Deco’ Photo Memorial Craft Workshop.
Make a mini shrine to the witchy, weird and goth goddesses of cinema – choose your favourite female horror icon and use a selection of curated stickers and craft materials to decorate a framed creation to take away. All materials provided.
Whatever Pays the Rent is a one-woman led community cinema project based in Birmingham. Putting on bespoke DIY screenings in different independent venues, their events always include immersive elements, arts and crafts and are welcome to all.
This screening is part of a season of films called Cursed! focusing on womxn on the edge of horror and is supported by Film Hub Midlands.
We’re grateful to the Czech Film Archive to be able to screen their new digitally restored version.
