Mermaid Chunky. It’s all in a name sometimes. The danceable, costumed, curiosity-rich duo of artists Freya Tate and Moina Moin are as imaginative as they profess – or, more to the point, as we all need them to be. For Supersonic Festival, they will be creating a very special expanded performance.
Freya and Moina are visual artists and musicians who found creative homes in communities like Stroud’s SVA and the capital’s Total Refreshment Centre – spaces where like-minded artists embrace the joy of chasing an idea to its most unexpected, and sometimes illogical, conclusion. It is in this spirit of collective energy and participation that Mermaid Chunky truly comes to life. Live, their performances are a vivid, genre blurring party, an invitation to lose yourself in layers of kick drums, recorders, saxophones, and the occasional frog. A kaleidoscopic, hypnotic dance ritual made all the better with more people, more ideas, more joyous chaos.
“Beyond the weaponised weirdness and arty playfulness, there is great emotion within Mermaid Chunky’s music: a celebration of these women and their friendship and the lives they’ve chosen.”
