We are very excited to welcome Backxwash once again to Supersonic Festival to present her new album – Only Dust Remains. For our festival goers, she does not need any further introduction as many will recall her triumphant UK debut in 2023, which was an all-time Supersonic highlight.
Zambian-Canadian rapper & producer – Backxwash aka Ashanti Mutinta, now based in Montreal, is noted for her work rooted in horrorcore, hip-hop and industrial metal genres. Winner of the prestigious 2020 Polaris Music Prize, her output includes a culmination of themes around the intersection between faith, identity, and queerness. The poetry of her lyrics are the beginning of a cathartic healing process in which she is granting herself permission to be angry.
Backxwash emerges from the shadows of her previous records with Only Dust Remains (March 28th, 2025), an album that expands her sonic landscape while delving into themes of mourning, reflection, and hope. Embracing a more melodic and complex sound, the record balances light and shadow, crafting an introspective yet outward-reaching narrative. Lyrically, it is dense, poetic, and emotionally raw, demanding to be felt as much as heard, solidifying Backxwash’s evolution while preserving the intensity that defines her music.
