Alys is a British horticulturist and journalist who presented the long-running BBC television programme Gardeners’ World and now writes a weekly column on gardening for The Guardian Weekend Magazine. She has an allotment and an urban back garden with lots of flowers and plenty of vegetables and she loves to infuse gin!

- 6 to 7 basil leaves
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- Gin
- Soda water
- Lemon slice to garnish
