ABDULLAH MINIAWY

Supersonic 2025

Abdullah Miniawy’s music defies categorisation, merging the spiritual intensity of Sufi chants with the improvisational freedom of jazz and the raw pulse of contemporary spoken word. His voice – lyrical, urgent, and deeply emotive – forms the core of a sound that bridges Eastern and Western traditions.

In his latest trio formation with trombonists Robinson Khoury and Jules Boittin, Miniawy explores an unorthodox and richly textured sonic palette. The interplay of his own voice and the two trombones – creates a resonant, genre-blurring landscape that feels both ancient and experimental. Melodic motifs from the Arab world weave through baroque, operatic, and avant-garde jazz elements, while rhythmic influences echo the chaos and poetry of Egyptian streets. His compositions are grounded in political consciousness yet soar with transcendental beauty, offering a communal, borderless listening experience. Miniawy’s sound is one of resistance, ritual, and reimagining – music that doesn’t just cross cultures, but reshapes them.

“Listening to Miniawy sing is like hearing someone let you in on their most intimate secret without any reservations or like a siren calling for your utmost attention, an almost hypnotising experience.”
