Black Galaxy vs Kreepa
ZX Spectrum Orchestra
Esquilax

Visuals by Beat13/Catweasel

In recent years, Birmingham has developed a
potent electronica scene, breeding artists such as Plone,
Broadcast, Pram, Magnetophone, Scorn, Sand, Tele:Funken, The
Modified Toy Orchestra, Dreams Of Tall Buildings, PCM and Mike In
Mono. Innovative artists need innovative record labels. The current
Birmingham scene is bristling with vital new set-ups that are
dedicated to the music’s confrontational byways, without
relinquishing its funky pulse…

Black Galaxy features Nicholas Bullen whose abrasive work in
Napalm Death initiated a new musical genre known as ‘Grindcore’ and
later a member of the dark, isolationist and dub-influenced Scorn.
In collaboration with Simon Mabbutt they fuse cold and alien
galactic soundscapes with minimal warped bass and glacial rhythmic
underpinnings to create nocturnal sonorities.

kREEPA mix electronic and acoustic elements to create
improvisations that explore the dynamic interplay between
acousmatic synthesis and instrumental approaches. (Members of
Sand)

ZX Spectrum Orchestra (feat. Brian Duffy + Mike in Mono) its
capability to create a more unconventional sound is limitless.
Everything you will see and hear is derived from a steep and
logistic learning curve. Peek, Poke and Merge.

Brian Duffy / Modified Toy Orchestra works with electronic sound
toys that have been rewired and reconfigured to create a series of
musical instruments each creating their own new electronic sounds
which oscillate between the familiar function of the toys and new
sounds far removed from the original function.

Mike In Mono (UK Halfeaten Records) aka Mike Johnston is better
known as member of Birmingham’s kitsch electronica trio Plone
(Warp). His ever growing fondness for ‘spoken word’ is now a
relished element in the mike-in-mono show.

Esquilax are a shiny party plastic new wave avante-garde pop
terror group -possessed by Devo, raised by Agoraphobic
Nosebleed.

METAL: A HEADBANGER’S JOURNEY – after show party

...

Date: Saturday 21 January, 7.30pm
Venue: IMAX, Millennium Point, Curzon St, Birmingham
Tickets: £6 (£4.50 concessions)
Bookings: 0121 202 2222

AFTER SHOW PARTY @ SCRUFFY MURPHYS FROM 9.30PM
FREE ENTRY
TWO FLOORS OF HEAVY METAL ACTION

Ladies and gentlemen, air-guitars at the ready. Heavy metal was
Birmingham and the Black Country’s gift to the world, and tonight
the gift will be returned.

Sam Dunn is a thirtysomething anthropology student and
self-confessed headbanger from Toronto. In making this film he
travelled through the blood and guts of the metal community,
talking to fans, kneeling at the feet of legends, stage-diving, and
on the whole having more fun than any documentary-maker is strictly
entitled to. What makes Metal such a joy to watch is Dunn’s
infectious pleasure in this much-derided music.

The film does touch on the movement’s dark side, including the
Norwegian death metallers connected with a series of
church-burnings, but on the whole this is a film about metal as a
force for good – most clearly in the 80s footage where we see Dee
Snider (of Twisted Sister) in front of the US Senate, persuasively
defending his spandex tribe from Tipper Gore’s concerned parents
campaign. Other advocates include Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden,
Lemmy from Motorhead, and Alice Cooper.

Star billing, however, should be reserved for guitarist Tony
Iommi, too often eclipsed in recent years by his Black Sabbath
colleague Ozzy Osborne. Sat back in his Warwickshire mansion, Iommi
talks with beguiling honesty about growing up in Aston, about
overdoing it in the 70s, and about Sabbath’s fondness for
crucifixes.

“Superbly crafted documentary is strong enough to make believers
out of non-metalheads, and inside enough to get the devil’s-horns
salute from the most diehard followers.” – Variety
Part of the Flatpack Festival, an unholy mishmash of shorts,
animation, music docs and live events in venues around Birmingham
from 19-22 January 2006.

Sonar Complex
Capsule & No-Fi presenta

17.30 :: live :: Black Galaxy (UK)

19.30 :: live :: Burning Star Core (US)

21.00 :: live :: Jazzfinger (UK)

Black Galaxy
Formed in 2003, this shifting ensemble (including members of Sand and one of the founders of Napalm Death) explores electro-acoustic improvisation through real-time signal processing, home-built instruments and extended techniques. Shards of bass and séance beats merge with digital ghost fog and glacial electronic modulations to create shadow-inflected soundfields.
http://www.monium.org.uk/

Burning Star Core
Born in Taiwan but now based in Ohio, C Spencer Yeh is a sculptor of breathtaking cliffs of electric sound, and also renowned as an improvising violinist and voice manipulator. Last year’s double CD compilation “Mes Soldats Stupides” showcased the disparate strands of his sonic approach spread over his vast discography, under his oft-adopted alias Burning Star Core. His output ranges from soaring electronic odes to hypnotic drone rock to scathing free jazz.
http://www.myspace.com/cspenceryeh

Jazzfinger
Drenching the north of England in subterranean drones since 1996,
Jazzfinger are currently receiving attention for their minimalist
methodology and maximal aural outcomes. Sat cross-legged, backs to the
audience in reverence to their bank of Marshalls, Hasan Gaylani &
Ben Jones use the lowest of lo-fidelity tools: pick-ups on cheap
guitars, bows, dictaphones, an old gong, older cymbals, walkie talkies
and tapes all merge into a subsonic sludge of mass hypnosis. Finally
ears are opening and many labels including Rebis, Curor, Cut Hands,
Heavy Tapes, Gold Soundz, Mallard Lake, Seed and Beta-Lactam Ring are
giving their recordings belated shelf space with around 20 releases
over the last couple of years, with plenty more to come. Gaylani &
Jones have also performed in early versions of Matthew Bower’s Sunroof!
& Hototogisu outfits.

Beestung Lips ‘Songs To and From An Iron Gut’ EP

...

The 8th of October  will see our first release on Capsule Records, and we’re really excited that Beestung Lips have decided to help us set in motion the first of what we hope will  be a multitude  top notch recordings .

Spewed up from the murky depths of Birmingham at some point in mid 2006, Bee Stung Lips is a four-headed hideous beast, with blood-shot eyes and tentacles stretching far back into the Midlands music scene.
Chewing on notes from The Jesus Lizard, Hot Snakes and Oxbow, and then spitting them back out, with additional nods to literary giants such as Charles Bukowski and John Fante, they create a provocative mixture of wilfully abrasive noise and viscera-shredding rock ‘n’ roll. Howling, anguished, and convulsive vocals tussle with rapid-fire drums, riotous guitar and blistering bass lines, before collapsing into a chaotic heap, breathless and foaming at the mouth.
Fiercely intelligent, yet unashamedly reckless, Bee Stung Lips possess an irrepressible addictive fury along with an abundance of technical aplomb. Rapidly garnering a sizeable reputation for their infamous live performances, they are currently rampaging across the UK in a whirlwind of chaos, phlegm, and bare flesh.
“taut, noisy, faintly melodic, tighter than a teenager’s waistline. Young and energetic”www.musicomh.com

“this Birmingham foursome hold no bars as they convulse and thrash around on stage like a rampaging beast, foaming at the mouth and spitting into the crowd. Their eyes are rolling, the sweat is pouring, they’re rocking back and forth: they’re possessed. It’s an unadulterated and unrelenting assault on your ear drums, with thrashing guitars, hammering drums and a screaming vocal “
 myvillage.com

“Ever fantasised about an unrepentantly vicious punk band fronted by a bloke who – with his preposterous ‘tache, white vest and braces – looks a bit like Freddie Mercury playing a Prohibition-era gangster and who launches stringy globs of spit skywards when he’s not emptying every last bit of air from his lungs into a microphone? BEESTUNG LIPS may just be for you. Memorably describing themselves on their MySpace page as “the wet spot in your bed and in your brain”, they’re even more in-your-face than Wolf Eyes – and that’s some achievement. The Capsule girls not only believe in them enough to put them on, but have also (in conjunction with Southern Records) put out their album Songs To And From An Iron Gut. You certainly need an iron gut to withstand the punch they pack. -” silentwordsspeakloudest.blogspot.com
