ASVA + MISTRESS + ATAVIST

...

ASVA (members of Burning Witch/Mr.Bungle)
MISTRESS
ATAVIST

Asva is blowing through
town and taking the drone rock medium to new lows. Not your average
“doom” band, Asva’s saddlebags are filled with wooden chapel organs
and subharmonic drones. Their packs are stuffed with
electroacoustic sensibilities and hand-scribbled laments to the
alchemical stars – they rode through walls of electrostatic fuzz to
toll the mission bell on this side of the firmament – then they
smashed your piano to splinters just for the sound it makes. In
their wake nothing remains but tumbleweeds and twisters, dancing
pointlessly in ageless dusty darkness. Lead by former members of
SUNN 0))) and Burning Witch, the band features members of Secret
Chiefs 3, the Master Musicians of Bukkake, and Black Horse. Added
to the line-up of Asva was Trey Spruance (Secret Chiefs 3 / Mr.
Bungle) on guitar.

Formed in Birmingham during 1999, MISTRESS have released two albums
to date  “Mistress” and “The Chronovisor”  to rave
reviews and have gigged with the likes of NAPALM DEATH, MAYHEM,
ELECTRIC WIZARD, BOLT THROWER and EXTREME NOISE TERROR. Their
hard-to-pin-down sound comes across as a sickening
sludge/grind/doom hybrid, reminsicent of the early U.K. grind scene
of the late ’80s and early ’90s, and has been described as “a vile
musical bastard, a bilious, screaming, snot-faced sludge orphan
with all the taste and decorum of a sexual encounter in Wormwood
Scrubbs.”

A year on from John Peel’s untimely death, a legion of bands, promoters and music-lovers will be gathering at events up and down the country to celebrate his legacy. During an unparalleled 40-year broadcasting career Peel was responsible for introducing UK listeners to everything from crackly old bluegrass to pounding techno, as well as giving a vital first break to countless influential artists including David Bowie, Joy Division, The Smiths and more recently the White Stripes.

As with so many other cities, Birmingham’s music scene owes him a huge debt for the inspiration, exposure and encouragement which his programmes provided. On Thursday 13th October, a selection of acts who benefitted from his adventurous ears will be gathering at the Jug of Ale in Moseley to raise a glass in tribute and provide the kind of mixed-up musical entertainment that the man himself might have enjoyed. Line-up includes Mistress, Harpies, Mike in Mono. Acoustic sets from Ben Calvert + James Summerfield and dj sets from Pram, Nicholas Bullen, Chris Clarke and Static Caravan.

SOME GIRLS
(
Members of The Locust, Swing Kids, Holy Molar, Give Up The
Ghost)

MALKOVICH

NOISE NOISE ALLORE

Some Girls have managed to turn the hardcore
scene on edge in these two short years since they started. Starting
merely as a loud crash and some simple ideas, they’ve progressed
into a powerful blitzkrieg of a band. With release of only two 7″
EP’s and a few legendary performances, Some Girls have truly become
headturners and groundbreakers within the punk/harcore world.

Some Girls is comprised of a cast of members that includes Wes
Eisold (Give Up The Ghost, American Nightmare), Rob Moran
(Unbroken, OVer My Dead Body), and Justin Pearson (The Locust,
Swing Kids, Holy Molar) among their collective line-up. Each member
brings their own approach and past musical history to the fold
creating Some Girls unique personality. A character that reeks of
the punk days of old while conjuring the raw musical urgency and
poetic prowess of the members’ previous artistic
accomplishments.
for further info on Some Girls check
www.threeoneG.com

According to their label Reflections Records, Malkovich combine
the groove of JR Ewing and Refused with the apocalyptic yet
controlled chaos and intensity of Converge and spicing it up with a
little classic Guns ‘N Roses. Malkovich’ songs are an intricate
tangled web of heavy and screeching guitars, hard hitting drums,
groovy basslines with passionate vocals. Abrasive, noisy and
dynamic modern hardcore with sheer brilliance in concept and
delivery!
Or as the band says: “We created a classical masterpiece dedicated
to vultures, shaved pussies and total doom!”

MONO + D. LOUIS BAKER + THE ARM

...

MONO (TOKYO)
D. LOUIS BAKER
THE ARM

Tokyo, Japan’s Mono are a peculiar group. While most bands offer
up their sincerest and most genuine recordings in their infancy and
spend the rest of their careers trying desperately to rediscover
their youthful energy, Mono’s trajectory has been quite the
opposite.

Their early recordings are a visceral homage to their past and
present heroes — the documents of a band boasting an impressive
symphony of sound in spite of their relatively small line-up. These
days, they have become one of the most passionately aggressive rock
bands of the last decade, executing their soaring crescendos,
titanic sheets of distortion and dark melodies with the delicacy
and precision of a folded paper crane.

http://www.age.vu/~sound/mono/e_index.html

D.Louis Baker has been in bands such as Solway Fifth & deadsunrising. Now
teamed up with members of The Starries, Mills & Boon & deadsunrising he has
turned to a more pop sound with mostly piano lead, full band songs. Expect
sing-alongs, dance-alongs and smiles all around. Sample some material at

THE FUCKING CHAMPS + EXPLODER + NOG

...

THE FUCKING CHAMPS
EXPLODER

NOG

Have you heard of them? This two guitar, one drummer,
instrumental band is insane. The Champs are heirs to a long lineage
beginning with Thin Lizzy and ending on the divergent ground of
Carcass, Pussy Galore and Kraftwerk. Hailing from San Francisco,
the sole aim of the “Kings of the Insanity Sound” is to set the
audience soaring high on the wings of sorrow.

Featuring former members of The Nation of Ulysses, Hydrox, the
Young Ginns, Taildragger, and The Event.
http://www.thefuckingchamps.com/

In a musical era dominated by manufactured pop/metal and bleeding-heart
emo depressives, Exploder enter the foray to bring melodic brutally
heavy metal to the masses and inject some much needed rock ‘n roll
spirit back to the dancefloors.

Hailing from the spiritual home of UK rock – Birmingham – Mick Kenney
(Anaal Nathrakh, Mistress), Dirty Von Donovan (Mistress, Katastrophy
Wife), Scotty ‘Too Hotty’ Proper and Blazing Barm got together in
summer of 2004 with the intention of creating a new metal band blending
a modern huge and heavy sound with classic old-school rock melodic
sensibilities.
  http://www.myspace.com/explodingmetal

Birmingham based techno metallers Bede and Baul form the duo that is
NOG. Playing extreme downtuned technical instrumental metal inspired by
bands such as Meshuggah, Cynic, Dillinger Escape Plan and Phil Collins,
NOG aim to completely crush your face in with extreme metal power. Or
at the very least confuse you a bit.

KK.NULL + Z’EV + ESQUILAX

...

KK.NULL (Japan – Zeni Geva)
Z’EV
ESQUILAX

This show brings together in collaboration two fiercely
independent and forceful musical forces for the very first time.
Shape shifting artists exploring the outer terrain for over a
quarter of a century and rarely playing live in the UK, this tour
pitches the two together in near comic fantasy. for they are
the..Original Gangsters Of Noise.. Of course now the .noise.
aesthetic or label hardly describes their outer-music exploration
at all but it is through their ability to hear music in the modern
din, the sound of space(s) and the constant rhythm of life that
their music orientates itself.

KK. NULL is a heavy dude billowing huge crafted cosmic sound into
the ear. A cult underground experimental Japanese musician whose
contemporaries include Merzbow and Otomo Yoshide.

Starting his career in the early 80’s by performing guitar
improvisations in the clubs and streets of Tokyo, he gained wider
notoriety as the leader, guitarist and singer of STEVE ALBINI
produced  progressive hardcore trio ZENI GEVA. Yet it’s his
solo work that has earned him a devout following in avant circles.
He has already developed an extensive arsenal of musical talent:
composer, improviser, singer, electronic wiz, drummer, and even
Butoh dancer. Recently his penchant is for indefinable atmospheric
electronics with a wild improv bent. He has worked with dozens of
bands and artists, which reads like a role call of the most
exciting musicians on the planet: JOHN ZORN, JIM O’ROURKE, RUINS,
MELT BANANA, BOREDOMS, OTOMO YOSHIDE, and EARTH.

Z.EV was involved in the USA.s early industrial movement. His
involvement has evolved through sound-art loops and installations
moving through pagan magik trance, mallet and metal noise-pieces,
Indonesian influenced drumscapes and sensory rhythm deprivation to
limitless music.

As dark, experimental punk was meshing  with art school in
70’s Europe, Z’EV brought non-traditional percussive voicings to
the NYC avant-garde scene (influencing Brian Eno among
others). Since then he’s explored ‘spatial poetics’ in
athletic yet graceful live performances that utilise colossal
metallic sheets, giant coil springs, interconnected pipes and other
found materials culled from the junkyards of the globe. His dozens
of collaborative projects include work with JOHN CAGE, GLENN
BRANCA, HAFLER TRIO, PSYCHIC TV, and RHYTHM &  NOISE. He
has released on TOUCH, STAALPLATT, SOLEILMOON and TZADIK amongst
many.

Sourvein came crawling into the East Coast / Southern
underground in
late 1992 with a single mission; to become one of the heaviest and
most
tour worn bands in America. Mission accomplished!

Inspired by heavy-weights like The Accused, Motorhead, Saint

Black Flag and early COC, Sourvein took the DIY approach with
their
vision and created a lurking monster of audible despair and a
word-of-mouth campaign that continues to build a cult-like

RAMESSES’ original and devastating sound embodies torrential
riffing,
freeform psychedelic jams and enigmatic spells. Emerging from
the
deepest forests of Dorset, England, this three piece formed in
2003
when ex-Electric Wizard drummer Mark Greening and guitarist Tim
Bagshaw
hooked up with Adam Richardson (bass + vox), formerly of Lord

FAST LADY
“Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?” harked words
transcribed by the late great Freddie Mercury. His emotion drenched
in reverb and operatic in it’s execution. How could he have known
then that aside from the hedonistic pleasure trove that was the
seventies that in the next century we would remiss those words and
regret that we were not his friend or crusted bed toy.We now find
ourselves 6 years into a century of throw away pop stars and in
desperate need of some musical lidament substantial enough to stem
the flow of emotion from the arrow gauged corporate wound that
punctured our rock hearts. If thirsty then drink from our cup and if
weary lay your head upon our laps.

HADDONFIELD ILLINOIS
Have you ever wondered what a band comprised of the bastard
offspring of John Carpenter and born into the heavy metal Mecca
that is Birmingham would sound like? The answer would be this,
clearly influenced by 70’s Italian zombie films they take the 3
chord punk ethos of yesteryear and apply it to synthesizers,
electro beats and layers of noise to create a strain of mutant
electronic
doom.

Black Cobra features Ex-Cavity and 16 members. They continue the short songs, the slow grindcore that have made their bands hidden legends. In recent years this strain of metal, which takes Black Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf” as a sonic starting point and slows it down, has proven to be one of the more inspired and intelligent (sic) of the tired old genre.
Their  sound  is best described as monstrous ! To deliver a sound as brutal and gutwrenching with only two people is just beyond belief. Sludgy hardcore/metal from Los Angeles.  For fans of the early Melvins albums, Neurosis, Today is the Day and Helmet.

FORMATION FLIGHT
SEELAND

Atlanta’s SNOWDEN drowns their brand of melodies in a sea of reverb heavy distortion and hypnotic layers. Anti-Anti
(JT1115), the band’s debut album for Jade Tree, integrates the ethereal
guitar resonance and dynamic percussion reminiscent of bands like RIDE
and early CURE, with the volatility of contemporaries such as THE YEAH
YEAH YEAHS. Combining a mix of tracks recorded by Erik Wofford (My
Morning Jacket, Explosions in the Sky, The Black Angels) at Cacophony
Recorders in Austin with tracks recorded and mixed by principal
songwriter Jordan Jeffares, Anti-Anti finds Jeffares and
company elevating their trademark sound into an unpredictable mix of
dirty pop soundscapes. If post-shoegaze exists as a genre, then SNOWDEN is proving their contention for the upper ranks.

FLOWER-CORSANO DUO + VOICE OF THE SEVEN WOODS + MILLS & BOON

...

Chris Corsano – a kinetic DIY drummer [one of the world’s most exciting] – uses this project to inject some punk tabla-type rolls into being while Mike Flower – an incendiary guitar player – also plays the “shaahi baaja” or “japan banjo” from India in an amazing solo style and transcendent manner.

As a powerful and loud guitar/drum duo, Lightning Bolt comparisons come cheap, but the Flower-Corsano Duo are something else; more like a punk-jazz-trash Konono No1, they have that special power to elevate through noise, rhythm and special harmonies. This is an experience the audience wants to have, an exhilarating sight/sound that shudders the body and cleanses the mind.

Michael Flower is best known as a member of Leed’s Vibracathedral Orchestra, a lynchpin of the improvising rock/noise/drone world. He has also has played with legendary artists such as Tony Conrad and Jandek as well as in projects such as the trio with Matthew Bower + C. Spencer Yeh.
Vibracathedral’s close relationship with Sunburned Hand Of The Man has meant MF has toured with them across the USA and Europe, both as a member and solo.

Rick
Tomlinson, self taught jack of all musical trades has since drawn
influence from an oblique archive of obscure LPs and bizzare
instruments and forged his own unique approach to making music. A
potent cocktail of krautrock, folk, jazz, tropicalia and Welsh
progressive rock has seduced stalwarts of Manchester’s alternative
music scene into countless collaborations with Rick at the helm.
Brandishing a masala of instruments ranging from brass and acoustic to
electric varieties Rick has shared studio sessions with the likes of
Lone Pigeon, Jane Weaver, Badly Drawn Boy, Dave Tyack and Aidan Smith,
as well as stage time supporting Lincoln, James Yorkston, Turin Brakes
and David Kitt. Various impromptu appearances at local folk clubs have
earned Rick a bourgening reputation amongst hard core enthusiasts and
mainstays of the folk scene such as John Renbourne who recently asked
Rick to accompany him on future live appearances.

Mills & Boon
Infamous locals channeling the spirit of Beefheart, creating their
own ramshackle brand of rambling psych spazz folk.  They
always deliver a stunning live performance that bristles with a
chaotic excitement and a sense that anything could (and might)
happen, these are the wonderful drunks of times gone by,
instruments in hand entertaining anyone they encounter.
