MELT BANANA
BRIAN DUFFY & MODIFIED TOY ORCHESTRA
NOISE NOISE ALLORE

Out of the old ashes sizzle and scream a new wave and
realization simply called MELT-BANANA. A maelstrom of experimental
heart surgery, Melt Banana walk on water, They effortlessly juggle
all of those sharks that think they’re swimming in new, unexplored
territories. Here are the imported children of the no waves gone
by, a hardcore-informed, audio info overload from Tokyo’s ferocious
underground. MELT-BANANA sweat out a super-adrenalized,
maxi-caffeinated collision of frenzied drum rhythms and torturous
guitar squeals through tiny, frantic, hyperrhythmic little songs.
Frontwoman Yasuko O.’s ultra-high-pitched screeches and Agata’s
screaming slide guitar vie for supremacy across a rhythmic frenzy
that is so ridiculous and precise, it will crush you with it’s
brilliance. Here are the cerebral gnashing guitars, the aggravated
pep squad proclamations and the neck-snapping rhythm change-ups
irresistible to those seeking a new musical truth. MELT-BANANA
doesn’t sound like anything you’ve heard. Simply put, they are
unclassifiable. If that’s not enough for you…. well then, back
into your cave Grogar

the most disturbing order.

Noise Noise Allore
Take their cues from such post punk luminaries as devo and gang of
four but add an urgency that is all their own, a world where
rhythmic time changes vie for attention with angular shards of
guitar and a vocalist that can barley contain the voice from within
his own body, a highly charged sexual rush of a show that will
leave you confused and wanting more..as all good lovers do. Expect
fruity fun.

DROPTHELIME

KID606
It has become increasingly difficult over the last few years to
imagine the electronic music landscape without having to make room
for Miguel Depedro, a.k.a. kid606. Only twenty-four years old, he
has already released three full-length studio albums, several
radically divergent remix albums, a handful of split albums,
countless singles, as well as making a number of compilation
appearances and being approached for remixes on a regular
basis.

From his now legendary reworking of N.W.A.’s Straight Outta
Compton (V/VM/Tigerbeat6) to his foray into minimal techno with
P.S. I Love You (Mille Plateaux), through to his highly praised
mash-up full-length, The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You the
Fucking Jams (Violent Turd), the kid has consistently sabotaged
categorization of his work by remaining true to its core; his
violence is against sound, against the sounds of comfort, against
the sounds listeners expect.

NOXAGT + CALVADOS BEAM TRIO + KNIVES

NOXAGT
CALVADOS BEAM TRIO
KNIVES

Hailing from Norway, Noxagt have come to burn your dirty soul.
Three piece in the bass, guitar, and drums format.  Their
records are pummeling masterpieces. Songs that breathe through
their mouth very loudly. Noxagt is at the forefront of the Nor-Wave
movement that takes cues from the American wrecking units like
LIGHTNING BOLT and PINK AND BROWN and adds a distinctly Norwegian
heavy slant.

NOXAGT’s music emphasises a heavy and powerful rhythm section,
with a
massive downtuned bass guitar and crushing, often shifting drums.
The
droning viola of Nils Erga has now been substituted for the
experimental
guitar playing of Anders Hana.

Anders is also a member of Jaga Jazzist, Ultralyd and Morthana.
His
roots are in free improvisation and his resumé includes
performances
with Trevor Dunn (Fantomas), Paal Nilssen-Love and Mats
Gustafsson.

NOXAGT is for fans of hard rock and swinging unconventional
riffage, dirty crawl such as the MELVINS, and single minded pummel
like label-mates/touring partners LIGHTNING BOLT.

ISIS + JESU + KILL THE THRILL

...

Isis
Jesu (ex Godflesh)
+ Guests

ISIS – This is an amazing heavy music masterpiece. It’s the kind of hard rock that seems straightforward enough at first listen – heavy riffs, window-rattling rhythms and guttural, forceful vocals. Upon closer inspection, however, much more about the music of Isis becomes clear; this is deep dark stuff that must be delved into without reservation before its intricate details are revealed. Aside from “Maritime” – which is mostly an open, airy and decidedly not heavy little ditty – the majority of Oceanic is hard, loud and even brutal. But subtlety and nuance are concepts that this band is obviously familiar with. For every passage of bone-crushing metal-esque rock, there is a powerful underpinning line of sonic harmony, something that takes the rough edge off the rugged sound and provides a steadfast but flexible accent that polishes the sound without making it slick. – Max Sidman

Drawing comparisons to Neurosis and Godflesh, but unique in its own right, ISIS is a visual and sonic experience of sludgy metal, noise, electronics, and ambience that must be heard to understand.

Big Business
Narcosis
Creepy Morons

If, after getting drunk on cheap whiskey you stumbled onto a
highway, an earthquake started, and then you were struck by an
oncoming eighteen wheeler, you might be able to understand the
massive force, chaos, and rock and roll mayhem behind Big
Business’s debut full-length Head For The Shallow.

Big Business is a two-piece hardcore-influenced rock act from
Seattle featuring Jared Warren of Karp and the Whip on bass and
vocals and Coady Willis of Murder City Devils on drums. The two
combine a heavy, sludgy, and rumbling bass tone with tenacious and
violent drumming to create a furious and exciting rock band. Think
Drive Like Jehu if they stripped down their sound to just bass and
drums and listened to nothing but 70’s hard rock and 80’s
metal.

Häxan

Tarantula A.D. a band who meld classical techniques of
composition with rock and heavy metal elements.
You can’t
fault Tarantula A.D. for talent. Each of the group’s three members
— Danny Bensi, Saunder Jurriaans, and Gregory Rogove — play
multiple instruments passionately if not always virtuosically. The
songs on the album combine chamber-music sounds of cello, violin
and piano with the more familiar rock sounds of guitar, bass, and
drums in multi-tracked layers, with complex interplay of
instrumentation and thematic elaboration, so that it’s rare the
music sounds as thin as a trio.

They have collaborated with:Sierra Casady from CoCoRosie, Alexander
and Damon McMahon from Inouk, and Devendra Banhart.

KNUT (Hydrahead)
TAINT (Rise Above)
SIKA  REDEM

Taint

As teenagers Taint formed in 1994’s South Wales DIY punk/metal
scene. After a string of formative demo cassettes the ‘Die Die
Truthspeaker’ mini-album was released in 2000, on London’s
Household Name records. Playing national shows with such bands as
Acrimony, Avail, Boy Sets Fire, Canvas, Capdown, Cathedral,
Consumed, Converge, Clutch, Earth Crisis, Hard To Swallow, Iron
Monkey, Stampin’ Ground, Spirit Caravan and Will Haven gave the
band great experience in honing their craft of sludge-y
discordances and emotionally charged outpourings. ‘Die Die
Truthspeaker’ garnered the band comparisons to such diverse bands
as Black Sabbath and Slint, a precedent to the glut of derivative
Neurosis-ites and post-rock/metal amalgams that are so currently en
vogue, 5 years later.
http://www.taint.co.uk/new_home.htm

Knut

Complexly beautiful soundscape from Switzerland’s Knut, ambient
heavy metal. Formerly labeled as a “groove-oriented tech band,”
Knut change gears slightly with Terrafomer, propagating a more
Neurosis-influenced tribal beat – sludgy riffs, slow tempos and
atmospheric sounds – yet weaving back in their own math-y style.
Repetition and trance-y beats frame the anguished, guttural vocals,
with words that sound like they might be in English, or might not –
it’s hard to say!  Their perfection of hypnotic, heavy
radiance puts them easily in league with the most sacred heroes of
the genre.

Sika Redem
The West Midlands has always had a knack of being on the cutting
edge of metal whether its with the forefathers of the genre, Black
Sabbath, the early thrash of Napalm Death or it’s newest hopes Sika
Redem, who somehow manage to have more creativity in one ten minute
track than most bands cover in a complete LP. Complex intricate
rhythms combine with crushingly heavy riffs all containing a
melodic edge that metal so often forgets about.

UNA CORDA
MOTHER TRUCKER

“Southernlords’ favorite, and most
excellent Japanese power trio; BORIS are back with another offering
from their eclectic catalog. Akuma No Uta is a 39 minute, six song
album that offers up a variety of styles from past Boris albums,
drawing from the heavier-than-thou rumble of Absolutego and
Amplifier Worship (both previously released on Southern Lord), to
the exquisite beauty of Flood, and the sheer jams-out-kickin’ of
Heavy Rocks.”

Una corda hail from Birmingham, England. Featuring two
guitarists, two bass players and una drummer, the band features
ex-members of illustrious underground acts-Cradle, Marker, Ackbar
and Mistress. Their unorthodox line up makes heavy music for light
sleepers, a darkly melodic epic soundscape carved out with black
headspinning riffs.

Formed in October 2003 Mother Trucker is the creation of Charles
Butler (Guitar), Thomas Moffat (Bass), James Davison (Drums) and
Christopher Scrivens (Guitar) from Birmingham in the UK.

Drawing influences from a wide range of bands like Black
Sabbath, Kyuss, Mogwai, Tool, Slint, Red Sparowes, Pelican &

contemporaries earlier works and create a meaty slab of music they
can call their own.

RED SPAROWES + MADE OUT OF BABIES + UNA CORDA

RED SPAROWES
MADE OUT OF BABIES
UN A
CORDA
http://www.seetickets.com

Red Sparowes is epic without bombast, heavy without a single
barre-chord riff and eviscerating without any clearly audible
vocals. The chiming, spindly layers of effect-laden guitars and the
swinging, entrancing drums on its Neurot Recordings debut At the
Soundless Dawn create textures reminiscent of Goblin, Tones on
Tail, Godspeed You Black Emperor and early Sonic Youth. Its attack
is syrupy and serpentine; subtle but frighteningly
deliberate.

Red Sparowes is comprised of Bryant
Clifford Meyer on guitar (Isis), Josh Graham on guitar (Neurosis
visuals and acclaimed video director), Greg Burns on bass and pedal
steel (also of Temporary Residence dark chamber folk sextet Halifax
Pier), Andy Arahood on bass/guitar (Angel Hair) and David Clifford
on drums (The VSS, Pleasure Forever).

As its playfully gruesome name
might imply, Made Out of Babies is not a demure or delicate band —
it’s an aberration of innocence.

In the tradition of artists as evocative as Jesus Lizard; as
imaginative and impassioned as Bjork; as discomfortingly frank as
Big Black and as unnerving as filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, the
New York City quartet summons a wholly unique claustrophobic fury.
It’s an eye-opening revision of everything that had once seemed
acceptable and rational.

“There are very few bands around at the moment that possess the
kind of wit, imagination and guts to make sure that every time they

then, for Liars” – Pat Long, NME

Drum’s Not Dead, the band’s third album and the follow up to
2004’s They Were Wrong, So We Drowned was partly inspired by a
relocation from New York to Berlin. It finds the band taking
another seismic step forward, switching continents and seizing new

Earth, the legendary Seattle group. As it was in the beginning,
Earth is still helmed by Dylan Carlson, joined by permanent member
Adrienne Davies on drums / percussion. Dylan Carlson is regarded as
an innovator within ambient, experimental, drone, doom circles. His
compositions and playing can be credited with influencing diverse
groups and musicians such as: Sunn O))), Boris, Jim O •Rourke,
Mogwai, Justin Broaderick (Godflesh/Jesu) and even Kurt
Cobain.

In the past Earth t ook the heaviness of Black Sabbath and the
Melvins to an even slower more mammoth plane. With •Hex …•they
have incorporated these new influences into an innovative sound all
their own.It •s a sound that is bold, vital and as essential as
anything they have ever done in the past, arguabley more so.

SUNN 0))) is a side project of Khanate/Burning Witch (Steve O’

Capsule Xmas Party:
PELICAN
MISTRESS

UNA CORDAA triumphant return for our Capsule Xmas party with live sets from Pelican, Mistress + Una Corda, not to mention, treats and stuff.

Unhindered by the impositions of the vocal yoke, Chicago instro-sorcerers Pelican transcend the limits of time and space to expound upon the stunning finesse and painstaking subtlety with which they command their already indelible sonic signature. Restoring instrumental composition to its former glory is no insignificant task, and to do so with such remarkable authority and presence is a testament to the sheer will and unmitigated talent of Pelican’s membership. Levying cinematic melody upon glacial heaviness, they achieve the sort of inevitability usually reserved for weather systems and natural disasters. Channeling the seasonal progressions of various far-flung landscapes, the sounds of Pelican are easily adaptable to both the active and passive listening experience, but their harmonic minutiae are best appreciated in a high-volume stereophonic headphone scenario. Successor to the critically acclaimed Untitled EP, Pelican’s debut full-length is a cyclical riptide of major-chord mastery and low-end triumph against which one can only abdicate any and all tendencies to resist total immersion.

THE LOCUST + YEAR FUTURE + 400 BLOWS

...

THE LOCUST
YEAR FUTURE
400 BLOWS

The Locust’s beauty has always come in finesse and intricacy. Thirty
seconds of pitiless hurricane squall. Epic, labyrinthine guitar licks
deconstructed, flipped ass-backwards, and compressed into
two-second-long baby snake squiggles. Dainty ticka-ticka-tickas of
hummingbird cymbal taps, followed by 80 hammer smacks squeezed into a
heartbeat. But just as America has changed since The Locust hatched
back in ‘95, so it goes with their sound. The band’s 2003 Anti- debut,
Plague Soundscapes, took its half-minute killzaps and added a gurgling,
hissing swamp of electronics. And their new one, Ipecac’s Safety
Second, Body Last (produced by Alex Newport) goes even further.
It is a single 10 minute, 11 second track divided into four movements,
like classical music (though classical as composed by serial
murder-junkie Ed Gein in cahoots with The Residents.) It begins in a
hellbroth of twitchy nerves par for the course of the band’s older
stuff. But suddenly it stops and you’re dropped into a tossing,
churning primordial sea of ominous splerrks, oscillating blits, and
liquidic rrerks sputtered out of Joey Karam’s keyboard—before the
vocals and Gabe Serbian’s drums come on again… only this time slow.
Pained. Agonized. Like a woolly mammoth caught knee-deep in a tar pit.
From there, the track moves through a miniseries of stages: slow and
sludgy to the fastest, herkiest jerkiest splatters you’ve ever heard;
JP’s bass making spacebrain noises; keyboards sputtering like blood
spurting and sloshing out of bullet-holes; guitars revving like
chainsaws or e-bowing themselves into the gorgeous, ear-massaging sound
of a mosquito’s lost cell-phone ringing at the bottom of lake
WhatTheFucki.
The lyrics flay through a surrealistic landscape touching down on man’s
need to compartmentalize his culture, gun-happy Americans, with a whole
host of characters showing up—fools, barbarians, troglodytes, sonic
cannibals. “Which one are you?” the record asks. “Whose side you on?”
But what does the music itself say? “The electromagnetic force has
something to say, not 100% sure what it is yet,” says Bobby. “But until
then, we (as a band) are going to allow for as many oscillators,
potentiometers, jagged tempo and note changes as it takes to allow its
message to be heard.

http://www.seetickets.com

Venetian Snares is nothing if not prolific, with releases across
a swathe of underground imprints like History of the Future, Zhark
and Hymen before finding his spiritual home on Planet Mu. Aaron
Funk’s twisted vision renders labels like breakcoreâ or drill and
bass hopelessly inadequate: Hyper-tensile jungle breakbeats twist
into an impenetrable Piranesi-esque mockery of drum n bass
pseudo-sophistication. With more hyper-complexity and
time-signature shifts than a King Crimson LP, V-Snares doomrush
break-tronixx impossibly pushes up the funk intensity into the red.
His latest album Huge Cylinder Box Unfolding has just been released
on Planet Mu, and is a fine example of his caustic nervous-tic
death-funk!!

http://www.vsnares.com/

PCM were formed in 1990 by Neil Harvey and Nik Wells in
Birmingham,UK Starting life as PCM Soundsystem, they began hosting
parties in warehouses and empty buildings in the B’ham area and
travelling to free festivals and outdoor parties with their sound.
Playing an eclectic range of music from acid to hardcore to early
jungle and often performing their own material live, they soon
built up a large following in the emerging underground dance scene
in the Midlands. After a nationwide clampdown on illegal parties in
1993, PCM started the infamous “CHAOS” club at local venue, the
Moseley Dance Centre later moving it to the Circus club in Balsall
Heath. With themselves as residents and playing hosts to guests
such as Hyper On Experience (moving shadow), Dj Edge (edge/rabbit
city), Ratty and Fallout, the club ran till ’96 and achieved near
legendary status as a mecca for those who liked their drum n bass
dark and heavy. In 1995, PCM remixed “The End” by SCORN for their
remix album “Ellipsis”. Despite being relatively unknown and in the
company of such luminaries as Coil, Meat Beat Manifesto, Autechre
and Bill Laswell, the PCM mix gained excellent reviews both in the
UK and abroad. This led to an ongoing relationship with Mick Harris
which has seen PCM play with Scorn in
France,Holland,Belgium,Germany,Czech Republic,Austria and
Switzerland as well as a 12″ ep on Harris’ now defunkt Possible
records and a solo project with Neil Harvey on Sub Rosa entitled
‘Shortcut to Connect”. Since then, PCM have had releases on labels
like Law and Auder, Domino, Manifold and EST and have done gigs
with Mike Paradinas, Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert, Scanner, Gary Clail,
D’arcangelo, Zion Train, Lords of Acid and Test Dept whilst
individually Harv has completed solo remix projects for Sub Rosa
Records and international reggae artists Steel Pulse as well as
touring the US with Scorn, Pigface Dead Voices on Air and FM
Einheit. Nik has Dj-ed with the likes of Roni Size, LTJ Bukem,
Nicky Blackmarket,Randall and is a resident at legendary techno
club, House of God. PCM have also done several projects with
Birmingham Jazz including the finales of Artsfest (massive annual
Bham arts festival) in ’98-’00 and a project called Edge of Motion
with various Bham Jazz musicians (inc. Chris Bowden-ninja tune).
PCM continue to play live on a regular basis. Recent live
performances for local promotion organisations Capsule and Drop
Beats Not Bombs have produced critical aclaim from the Independant
online and The Wire magazine. This summer sees PCM making a debut
appearance at The Glade Festival, with an appearance the week after
at the now legendary Supersonic Festival with DJ Food and The

Like a cement mixer slowly filling the room as you read this web page, KHANATE belches
another discharge of lung stopping power. Not happy music, but TOTAL music. Even more
sparse than their first record on Southern Lord,
this boils doom down to the individual atoms. Slow and deliberate, it
paints the room the room in coal dust choking all in its path.
Necessary and essential for those picking up the pieces from similarly
minded projects from sludge captains like the MELVINS, EARTH and BORIS.
Buy this and live forever with the knowledge of the gods!

Its been said about KHANATE before that “slow is the new loud” (Julian
Cope actually). This being true, Khanate’s sound is a deafening roar. A
small nuclear bomb in the swimming pool as you sip an ice tea. Take the
brutal slow dynamics of EYEHATEGOD or EARTH and add a chilly macabre
menace and then you have a good start on where this record will leave
you. Members in the band are in bands such as BURNING WITCH, SUNN

CAPRICORNS + BARONESS + GODDAM OX

...

CAPRICORNS
BARONESS
GODDAM OX

Straddling the fence between aggressive sludge and technical
fireworks, Baroness is carving out their own unique plot in the
ever-cramped world of underground metal. If these guys aren’t on
your radar yet you need to rectify that little oversight quickly.

www.yourbaroness.com/

www.c-a-p-r-i-c-o-r-n-s.com/
The
London, England based behemoth known as Capricorns was formed by four
men in the latter half of 2003 currently or previously involved in
projects as disparate as Iron Monkey, Orange Goblin, Bridge and Tunnel,
The Dukes of Nothing…the list goes on.

While the original impetus never went much beyond “does it slay?” the
music has developed over the past two years into a heady mix of bone
crushing brutality and dark, subtle beauty that has won over fans of
the Heavy Arts nationwide.

A heap of successful shows with the likes of Melvins, Pelican, Jesu,
Unsane and Oxbow to name a few quickly led to last years self titled
debut ep which immediately received abundant praise from the record
buying public and critics across the globe.

Emboldened by the ep’s initial success and reeling from a creative
watershed period in the House of Capricorns (their leaky Walthamstow
rehearsal room) the time seemed right to broaden their palette and
knock out a full-length album.

Recorded in a former GDR radio broadcast centre in Berlin, ‘Ruder Forms
Survive’ sees Capricorns up the sonic ante whilst still maintaining a
deep love for the purity and tradition of The Riff.

A refreshing departure from the po-faced, go nowhere excesses of their
instru-metal contemporary’s Capricorns have somehow succeeded in
combining the Armageddon punk attitude of Amebix with a doomed out,
Ummagumma era Pink Floyd propelled by deepest swing this side of John
Bonham. The icing on this blackened cake is The First Broken Promise, a
unique collaboration with Oxbow singer and raconteur Eugene Robinson –
first attempted onstage earlier this year at the Sounds Of Excess
festival in Birmingham and now committed to infernal wax and guaranteed
to scare the shit out of you.

‘Ruder Forms Survive’ is High Brow for the Low Brow, sophisticated yet
never shying away from ham-fisted bombast because, after all, that is
what drew us all to Metal in the first place.

Steve Reid is the legendary drummer who in 1964 at 19 years of age played on Martha Reeves & the Vandellas’ ‘Dancing In The Street’, and subsequently went on to play with Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and James Brown (think about that for a moment), not to mention Fats Domino, Sun Ra, Peggy Lee, Chaka Khan, Dexter Gordon, Dionne Warwick and many, many more. Their unique live show blends Kieran’s electronic experimentation with Steve Reid’s laid back yet complex driving polyrhythms.

TRANS AM + CLARK + THE ARM

...

Formed in 1993, Trans Am remains the trio of Nathan Means (bass, keyboards, vocals), Phil Manley (guitar, keyboards, bass, vocals) and Sebastian Thompson (drums, vocals, bass, guitar, programming). Over the course of six albums and three eps, Trans Am have pleased and confounded critics with their ever-changing music style. From their most Deutsch-influenced self-titled debut to Futureworld, their 80’s inspired super-synth pop tunes (about 2 years before it was cool) to the raw rock of Red Line, their musical style has always varied.

ATP recordings night: JACKIE OMF + ALEX TUCKER + INCA ORE

ATP Recordings night:
JACKIE O MF
ALEXANDER TUCKER
INCA ORE

Jackie-O Motherfucker was formed in 1994 by Tom Greenwood and Nester Bucket layering guitars and sax over hand cut analog tape loops and collage, collections of found sound, field recordings, cut-up classic rock, hip-hop beats and 4-tracked drones. Assembled and processed, the band rehearsed often in the basement of an abandoned drug store on Mississippi St. in North Portland.

The first live performances featured an amplified reel to reel tape machine and electric guitar while additions of live percussion, 8-track tapes, alto sax, and a turntable filled out the sound. Many of the performances of this time were done to provide a live musical score for shadow puppet theatre.

Alexander Tucker began as the vocalist in post-rock hardcore 5-piece ‘Unhome’ who released one album “A Short History of Houses” (Unlabel) and a split single with Papa M. Unhome split in late 1999 and Tucker went on to tour with Detroit space-rockers ‘Fuxa’. Simultaneously, Tucker had been developing his interest in improvisation using detuned guitars, tape loops, mini disc player and fx pedals. In early 2000 Tucker recorded a solo self-titled album of acoustic finger-picking, experimental electronics, field recordings and spooked vocals, which was picked up by Tom Greenwood of Jackie-O-Motherfucker and released under his U-Sound Archives label.

Tuckers’ ability to combine compositional song structures, drones, layered vocals and improvisations culminated on his 2005 album “Old Fog” (ATP/R), a collection of spectral moods, eerie landscapes and fragile emotions.

His commanding live performance has led to collaborations which include working with Stephen O’Malley (SunnO))), Khanate) on his Ginnungagap side project (Southern Records limited Latitudes series), providing the soundtrack to Lali Chetwynd’s performance piece at Tate Britain and playing
as a part of JOMF, Duke Garwood, and Little Wet Horse.

Alexander Tucker is also a visual artist, creating artwork for all of his album covers and side projects, including ongoing drawings and comic artwork for ‘Sturgeon White Moss’ (White Moss Press) and the new cover for Nordic doom-master Wolfmangler'(Aurora Borealis).

Don Caballero formed in Pittsburgh, PA in 1991 by drummer Damon Che, guitarist Mike Banfield and bassist Pat Morris. Individual veterans of the local scene, they had offers for gigs before they’d even found a lead singer, and simply wound up remaining instrumental. Their name was taken from an SCTV sketch in which the Joe Flaherty character Guy Caballero was a Mafia don. Through some personal contacts, the band got a chance to enter the studio with producer Steve Albini, who recommended them to Touch & Go Records. Don Caballero releases several singles on Touch & Go before completing their Steve Albini-produced debut, For Respect in 1993. Just prior to the recording of For Respect, Ian Williams joined Don Caballero as a second guitarist.

Pat Morris departed following its release, and was replaced by Matt Jencik for Don Caballero 2, a loud, ugly, intricate album that was released to rapturous reviews in 1995. Hailed as a math rock landmark in some quarters, 2 expanded the group’s audience by leaps and bounds. In its wake, several Caballero side projects sprang up: Che played guitar in another Pittsburgh band call Thee Speaking Canaries, who issued an album not long after; Williams, meanwhile, formed an experimental side project called Storm & Stress, which was most often based in Chicago. Matt Jencik soon left the group and went on to play with Hurl and Taking Pictures. Pat Morris returned to fill his original position and in 1998, this lineup released What Burns Never Returns after which Mike Banfield and Pat Morris both left the group. Morris’s spot was eventually filled by Storm & Stress bassist Eric Emm (aka Eric Ehm).

A compilation of Don Caballero’s early formative singles appeared in 1999, under the title Singles Breaking Up, Vol. 1 (a reference to The Buzzcocks’ Singles Going Steady). In 2000, the group issued its fourth proper album, the cleaner-sounding and more subdued American Don, which again won complimentary reviews. A year after the release of American Don, Williams and Emm left the fold leaving Che to discover what is now the current Don Caballero lineup. Also in that interim, Che continued to work with Thee Speaking Canaries, releasing ‘Get Out Alive: The Last Type Story’ on Scat in October of 2003.

This new Don Caballero lineup includes Creta Bourzia guitarist and bassist Jeff Ellsworth and Jason Jourver as well as guitarist Gene Doyle.

Don Caballero prove once again that they are innovators of their craft and remain head and shoulders above their peers. The bands powerful, percussive-heavy sonic advance is more dense, more expansive and burns with a new-found urgency.

The London, England based behemoth known as Capricorns was
formed by four men in the latter half of 2003 currently or previously involved
in projects as disparate as Iron Monkey, Orange Goblin, Bridge and Tunnel, The
Dukes of Nothing…the list goes on.

While the original impetus never went much beyond “does it slay?”
the music has developed over the past two years into a heady mix of bone
crushing brutality and dark, subtle beauty that has won over fans of the heavy
arts worldwide.

Born from a blizzard of horned cats, Crippled Black Phoenix bring you a twisted cinematic experience, handcrafted by a mercenary crew of underground heavyweights, giving depth and gravity to regal songs about love, loss, tragedies and redemption.

Back in the summer of 2004, Electric Wizard drummer Justin Greaves (also of Iron Monkey, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine) started recordings songs and soundscapes he’d had in his head for several years onto minidiscs, looping them through an old stereo to achieve the multi-layers, these were the bones of what would eventually become the international outfit that is CBP. The songs that marked that moment in time would take on a new strength, initially aided by good friend (and Mogwai bassist) Dominic Aitchison. Other great compadres followed, Panthiest members Andy Semmens and Kostas Panagiotou, Nial McGaughey of 3D House of Beef and -(16)- amongst others and solo folk singer-songwriter Joe Volk, who also fronts heavy rock band Gonga, all stepped up to bring a variety of influences and skills to complete the line-up.

Bringing us up to date in 2006, CBP enter SOA Studio (Portishead, Gonga, The Heads etc..) in Bristol, UK, to record the debut full-length album “A Love of Shared Disasters”, a collection of self-penned “Endtime Ballads”. During this, one of the hottest summers on record, the old friends aligned and the fully realized visions that had been pestering Greaves for the past few years were finally given life. The album, the first of a trilogy, deals with in the timelesness of honesty and tragedies laid bare, featuring sordid tales from the pages of literary history combined with personal stories of contemporary loss and love. Musically, the songs are driven by a need to stretch out and do something timeless and different from the band-members previous musical ventures but at the same time carrying over a little of their collective influences. This is about pushing personal musical boundries and taking the listener on a journey of their own. Using a blend of modern amplified and Victorian era equipment plus an esoteric collection of strange but wonderfull ways of creating the dark-americana type ambience, the crew of CBP have lovingly fasioned a soundtrack for the “endtime” that has the impact of a Marshall stack, but with the timeless voice of classic instruments.

“A Love of Shared Disasters” is to see it’s release through Invada Records (owned and run by Geoff Barrow of Portishead) and will see the band enter into the live on stage phase, playing shows in selected cities, bringing the public the melodic-but-twisted carnival that is Crippled Black Phoenix.

Rick Tomlinson, self taught jack of all musical trades has since drawn influence from an oblique archive of obscure LPs and bizzare instruments and forged his own unique approach to making music. A potent cocktail of krautrock, folk, jazz, tropicalia and Welsh progressive rock has seduced stalwarts of Manchester’s alternative music scene into countless collaborations with Rick at the helm. Brandishing a masala of instruments ranging from brass and acoustic to electric varieties Rick has shared studio sessions with the likes of Lone Pigeon, Jane Weaver, Badly Drawn Boy, Dave Tyack and Aidan Smith, as well as stage time supporting Lincoln, James Yorkston, Turin Brakes and David Kitt. Various impromptu appearances at local folk clubs have earned Rick a bourgening reputation amongst hard core enthusiasts and mainstays of the folk scene such as John Renbourne who recently asked Rick to accompany him on future live appearances.
