Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present is a non-fiction film examining the pioneering life and works of artist, musician, and educator, Tony Conrad.

Conrad was one the great American artists of our time, we were honoured to have him perform as part of our 10th anniversary edition of Supersonic.

Since the early 1960s, Conrad’s films and compositions have been the stuff of legend for artists and musicians everywhere. His vast, inter-disciplinary repertoire has single-handedly created and influenced major film and compositional movements. He performed in and recorded the soundtrack to Jack Smith’s legendary Flaming Creatures; he turned the paradigms of cinema upside down with The Flicker, a film composed of only black and white frames; his development and practice of Just Intonation and Minimalism through his work with Stockhausen and La Monte Young still has the music establishment scratching their heads; his pivotal role in the formation of The Velvet Underground has directly or indirectly influenced everyone who has picked up a guitar since; as an early adopter of activist public access television he democratised the emerging medium of portable video.

“I always thought it was strange that people didn’t know more about The Melvins and I felt their story needed to be told. The band members had told me that a few people had talked the talk but had never followed up on their threats to make a film about them, so a little over two years ago things really fell into place and now the end product is finished for all to see, ” explained Director and Co-Producer Bob Hannam, who worked in tandem with co-producer Ryan Sutherby to bring the film to fruition. “It has been a long labor of love for the both of us and we are excited for people to see the film and understand the workings of a truly great band.”

“The Colossus of Destiny: A Melvins Tale” follows the band’s history, with rare behind-the-scenes footage from their early days in Washington to their multiple modern incarnations with an eye on the enduring influence they’ve had throughout their 30-year plus history. The documentary features interviews with Mike Patton, Chris Cornell, Jello Biafra, Gene Simmons, Krist Novoselic, Mark Arm, J. Mascis, Josh Homme, David Yow and many more.




An Interview With Black Mass Rising Creator Shazzula


We have a real audio-visual treat in store for you this year; a screening of Belgian artist Shazzula Nebula‘s experimental film ‘Black Mass Rising’, a mystical lo-fi experience examining occult and apocalyptic themes through a dark procession of creepy, faintly psychedelic visuals. As you would expect from an ex-member of bands like Aqua Nebula Oscillator and White Hills, Shazzula has put just as much time and effort into the film’s soundtrack as she has its visual aesthetic, with a soundtrack consisting of exclusive tracks from the likes of Master Musicians Of Bukkake, Sylvester Anfang II, Burial Hex, Kinit Her, Cultus Sabbati, Aluk Todolo, Menace Ruine and many, many more. We got in touch with Shazzula to find out more about this extraordinary film, and why she’s just as excited to bring it to Supersonic as we are to screen it!

Supersonic: What inspired you to create ‘Black Mass Rising’?
Shazzula: In terms of cinema…

Why should Supersonic attendees check out the film?
Well… if they like those movies… and if they like the bands on the soundtrack… They really should get into it… It would be an opportunity to hear in one project all those great bands, all finally united. Like a Sound & Visual Communion!

The list of contributing artists reads like a fairly comprehensive list of contemporary avant-garde/ esoteric musicians. How did you get all these bands involved in the project?
I love them all, they all are unique and they are indirectly related! For some of them, I was in contact or they are friends or we met…

When the idea of the movie first came to my mind, I did not want to do the whole soundtrack myself (I’m not really into “me myself and I”…). I thought it would be great to get all these music lovers in one crazy D.I.Y project!

I never thought the movie will have success or anything, I just wanted to do it and believe in it 100%, and I was so glad they all accepted to follow the Dark Path To The Light !

If time, money and space were no object, what would you have done differently with the film?
Well… I never wanted to have money for this project… it was from A to Z all improvised on my travels with friends & yes: The baby was born after 9 months…

The next movie project is heavier, it will be filmed in Mongolia.

Contribute To Drunk In Hell’s Set With The Imperfect Cinema Workshop!


Plymouth’s Imperfect Cinema are keen proponents of DIY culture, specialising in exploring participatory production as a way to democratise and open up film making to individuals from all walks of life, reclaiming this art form from the high production values and billion dollar studios that many believe have corrupted it. With this year’s ‘Halide-Oxide’ workshop, the collective will be inviting the audience to arm themselves with vintage/redundant filming equipment (the titular ‘halide’ of super-8mm film and the ‘oxide’ of audio cassette tape used to capture video) and shoot the unique post-industrial setting of the festival, hopefully capturing some of the stark, mechanical aesthetic that played such a pivotal role in the creation of Heavy Metal. This footage will then be used in two different ways; Imperfect Cinema will be using some of your footage as an alternative visual document of the festival which will form a unique part of the archive of its tenth anniversary, and the rest will provide the visual backdrop for noise-rock titans Drunk In Hell’s set the next day, granting a unique opportunity to directly influence the very spirit of the festival itself!

Speaking of Drunk In Hell, the band have recently made their demo cassette available as a free download via their Bandcamp page – a vicious, snarling recording doused with liberal splashes of piss and vinegar. If you abandoned Unsane and Eyehategod in a damp cardboard box on the cold streets of Middlesbrough, then checked back in on them a few weeks later, the aggressive, hopeless sound they’d be unleashing wouldn’t be a million miles away from Drunk In Hell’s cathartic uproar. To give you a further idea of what to expect, the band have also uploaded a full live set from Leeds last year, but we have a feeling not even this furious recording will adequately prepare you for the full-on brutality that these guys are going to bring to the Supersonic stage this year.

You can catch Drunk In Hell performing on Saturday 20th October – just don’t expect to come away unscathed!


Trash Humpers


Trash Humpers is a 2009 film directed by Harmony Korine that was shot completely on worn VCR home video. There are many things that the film comments on in its entirety, but the choice of the seemingly archaic VHS tape came as a result of our modern obsession with technology and the concept that everything has to be perfect; that which is not can simply be deleted. We have entered an age where if we do not like a photograph, we can choose to get rid of it forever, wiping its existence from both our memory card’s and our memory. However, as a child of the 1980’s, Korine remembers his first camera, given to him by his father, noting how he used to reuse the tape over and over again. He commented in an interview with Chris Bilton that “There was something interesting about certain images or scenes bubbling up to the surface”, whereby there is “something sinister” about its unexpected nature and grainy reality.

 The idea for the film came about whilst walking his dog late at night in the back alleys of his hometown ofNashvillewhere Korine encountered trash bins strewn across the ground in what he imagined as a war zone. Overhead lights beamed down upon the trash in a Broadway-style that Korine found very dramatic. They began to resemble human form, beaten, abused and “very humpable”. Korine remembered, as a teenager growing up in Nashville, a group of elderly peeping toms who would come out at night. He has described them as “the neighborhood boogeymen who worked at Krispy Kreme and would wrap themselves in shrubbery, cover themselves with dirt, and peep through the windows of other neighbours.”


The film has been described as perversely beautiful, which may have come as a result of the original conception of the film, this being as a group of photographs. Korine would go out late at night and dress his assistants in crude masks that resembled burn victims. He would then proceed to photograph them fornicating with trash and vandalising various things using the worst quality cameras he could find. It was only when the photos came out so disturbing that the idea for a movie became conceivable.


Watching Trash Humpers will surely be a stand-alone experience. The juxtaposition of the elderly exteriors of the characters at once clashes with their youthful vigor and youthful mischief whereby the audience will watch in an unbelieving trance as they defecate, smash televisions, let off firecrackers and tap dance. His characters act in a way that has been perceived as violent, but he has turned this on its head; rather than embracing violence as acts that are committed without purpose, he instead uses the film as almost an “ode to vandalism”. He has commented that there can be a creative beauty in the mayhem and destruction created by violence, and his comedic characters act with almost a vaudevillian horror element to what they do. Importantly, he ensures that his characters are having a good time in what they are doing, marking their territory amongst his elaborate portrait of the “American Landscape”. Just as lamp posts serve a purpose in lighting up the gutter, the characters of Korine’s film light up the deep set flaws of the voyeuristic American society.


Experience Bruce Lacey with the Bruce Lacey Experience




‘Professor’ Bruce Lacey is perhaps undoubtedly the star in the crown of British eccentrics. Many Supersonic attendees will be too young to remember the era when Lacey’s avant-garde performances that created an on-stage fantasy which juxtaposed a particular British zeitgeist between the 50’s and 70’s. However, let me tell you that Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller has teamed up once again with Nick Abrahams, and created a cinematic extravaganza that draws consistently on the satirical nature of the nation’s customs.

Lacey’s mechanical constructions have oscillated between robotic sex symbols to tool kits for aspiring shamans to a Flea Circus. However, what remains the same is that he is one of the most exciting performers of the last Century, despite his status as a relative ‘unknown’. Many have attributed this back to his incredible foresight. Much like Ray Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451 who predicted that one day we would all be watching televisions the size of walls, Lacey was unbelievably ahead of his time. He is inter-disciplinary, a collector of talents. His foresight is difficult to comprehend, now that we exist within a sea of celebrities who seem to be a jack of all trades, but a master of none. It is this, amongst other things that Deller and Abrahams have chosen to explore.

The Bruce Lacey Experience celebrates both Lacey’s work and his life, tracing back to how he used his initial training as an electrical mechanic to further his interest in the eccentric world of television. He has worked both backstage and on the stage itself, and it is this hybrid of talents which make him such a riveting object of fascination. There is no doubt that the film will be an addition to the festival line up that will inspire, engage and hopefully encourage a ‘make and do it yourself’ attitude amongst revelers.

If film is your thing, why not have a look at the rest of Supersonic’s amazing cinematic line-up. With ‘Bullshit Detector‘ and ‘The Luxury of Empire’ running alongside the Bruce Lacey Experience, festival goers will experience a selection of sentiments and ideas that differ between each recording. From the DIY ethos of Bullshit Detector, in its understanding of the cultural significance and the legacy of CRASS records, to the intimate portrait of Oxbow on the French leg of their 2009 European tour, each film offers an exploration of the relationship between art and music in ways that will undoutedly stimulate your senses.

$100 and a T-shirt- a film about zines

‘$100 and a T-shirt’ is a cultural analysis of what causes zine makers to tick; what the hell zines are, why people make zines, the origin of zines, the resources and community available for zine makers, and the future of zines. The film interviews around 70 zine makers, ex-zine makers, and readers from the northwest USA. Four years in the making, the film features footage of the Portland Zine Symposium, a zine bicycle tour of Portland, and activities bringing zine culture to life. If you’ve ever wanted to know more about zine history and about what writers are doing right now to make their publications relevant to the 21st Century, this film may give you some clues.

Also, look out for our zine panel discussion that follows the film, and make sure you take a look at the Birmingham Zine Festival exhibition and stalls.

Fonal Records shorts


Fonal Records is an independent record label from Finland that has been releasing experimental music since 1995. Initially established by Sami Sänpäkkilä to release his own recordings under the name Es, Fonal is a truly independent record label in every sense and now has over 80 releases to its name, This music video screening presents a variety of techniques ranging from animation to live action. Videos have been shot with mobile phones, super 8, 16mm film and Red One cameras, and all have been made with a zero budget. This special programme includes work from such label luminaries as Lau Nau, Kemialliset Ystävät, Paavoharju, Islaja and Shogun Kunitoki.

High and low art collide in this gorgeously photographed, sex and gore filled, delirious trash-art gem. Udo Kier’s demented central performance ranks as one of the most intense and outrageous in cinema history.

This screening is part of Psychotronic Cinema’s late night horror at Supersonic. Psychotronic Cinema programmes cult classic films at UK cinemas and is responsible for the legendary “All Night Horror  Madness” event and the upcoming “All Night Bad Movie Experience”.

Dario Argento’s 70s masterpiece remains an iconic milestone in horror cinema, playing out as a hallucinatory onslaught of dreamlike imagery, atmosphere, colour and sound. Goblin’s legendary score will need little introduction to Supersonic fans.

For the last day of our film programme week, we spoke to Dan Paolantonio from the DIY film collective Imperfect Cinema to get the low-down on what to expect at Supersonic 2011.

1. Which five words describe what you know about Supersonic?
Eclectic, adventurous, surprising, engaging, cake!

2. What can people expect of Imperfect Cinema at the festival?
A combustible collision of DIY punk ethics and car boot sale film cameras! We hope that our  event will not only inspire new context for endangered imaging technologies, but also a form a unique audio-visual documentation of Supersonic,  founded in collaboration, and the creative risk of improvised performance! We are absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with Sound Kitchen this year & to continuing Imperfect Cinema’s close working relationship with the inimitable Nicholas Bullen!

3. Why do you explore filmmaking as a medium – what does it do for you that nothing else does?
This is of course the burning question and one which I feel has a real relevance to our appearance at Supersonic this year! Filmmaking for me is actually very much a musical experience, in that it conjures those feelings that I am only otherwise able to experience when listening to music (and as I play the guitar with all the grace & dexterity of a chimp wearing boxing gloves, everyone should actually be incredibly relieved that i am most often found behind a camera rather than in front of a Marshall stack!).

4. Who or what else on the bill are you hoping to see?  (And why?)
Where do I start! Barn Owl for their expansive sonic vistas, Wolves in The Throne Room for their unique blend of grim meets green, Drunk in Hell for their single riff bludgeoning, Scorn for that singular low-end, Mike Watt because the old punk in me needs to get over Minutemen, Ore out of sheer curiosity, Silver Apples because I never thought I ever would, and of course Backwards (if only to confirm that this experience will be as utterly dreadful as Nic Bullen’s boasts!).

5. Finally, your essential ‘surviving-Supersonic’ items are…
An open mind, earplugs, optrex, funds for cake, and a calm & discerning eye when considering everything on offer this year!


Film week, day 2: ‘Man With A Video Camera’


Supersonic film week, day 2: Man With A Video Camera

Supersonic 2011 are pleased to present ‘Man With A Video Camera’, a documentary about the Finnish band Circle.  Happily, Circle themselves are also performing this year, thus squaring the, um, circle.  In fact, although we say ‘documentary’, ‘Man With A Video Camera’ is closer to an anti-documentary.  As with, say, ‘Lost In La Mancha’, Terry Gilliam’s film-about-making-a-film-of-Don-Quixote, the actual story appears to be somewhere else, somewhere unplaceable.  Perhaps that’s because filmmaker Esko Lönnberg himself has come from elsewhere, into Circle’s world…

Lönnberg left his middle-class job in Sweden and returned to his hometown of Pori, Finland to pursue his artistic desires.  The shooting for the film mostly takes place in the countryside where the band is recording their next album. The circumstances turn out to be chaotic and most of the band appear totally uninterested and unengaged.  But, Esko tries to keep the crowd together, even though he does not know himself if he is going to end up with fiction or non-fiction.  Throughout, Esko captures everything essential and unessential on video while the band plays.

In the end, this unique film tells you all you need to know about documentary-making, its perils and its rewards.





STILL BEFORE is an intimate portrait of San Francisco art brut quartet OXBOW, recorded by their former booking agent, soundman and man Friday MANUEL LIEBESKIND, during two weeks in Europe in late Fall 2009.
Given unprecedented access, Liebeskind attempts to uncover the grinding obsessions, the machinations and the underpinning thought process behind making, playing, and touring on music that embraces art as though its life depended on it. Across five countries, over a dozen shows, and in front of rapt audiences OXBOW, and chronicler Liebeskind, explore the WHYS of art creation, the touring life and 20 years in, the motivations for continuing the same.
STILL BEFORE is filmed entirely on an iPhone with a 640×480 pixel resolution and edited for the screen.

Supersonic Q&A no. 4: ZOMBI

Using all-analogue vintage synths and sequencers, coupled with live drums and bass, Zombi’s sound is far more expansive than you’d imagine a duo could ever be.  Taking inspiration from progressive rock and soundtracks, their music appeals to both fans of Genesis and Pink Floyd as well as touring partners like Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Sparowes.  Steve Moore, bass & synths, is the man answering our questions.

1. Which five words describe what you know about Supersonic?
Eclectic, hospitable, punctual, loud, fun.

2. What can people expect of Zombi at the festival?
Golden oldies.

3. Why make music – what does it do for you that nothing else does?
I ask myself the same thing every day, I have no idea why I still do this.

4. Who else on the bill are you hoping to see?  (And why?)
Tony Conrad!  I’ve never seen him perform live.  Also Secret Chiefs 3 and maybe Wolves in the Throne Room, haven’t seen either of them in a while.

EPIC, a new short film is the first music documentary to turn the cameras away from the performers, focusing purely on the people who are the very reason for their existence… the audience. It will celebrate the live music experience as a rite of passage, a bonding experience, an obsession, a job, a trip down memory lane and in some cases… a near-religious experience.

Epic is a one-off production for Film Four and may be filming at Supersonic Festival. The film – a homage to the live music experience – offers gig-goers a chance to have their perfect gig experience immortalised on film. The film will premiere at a red carpet screening at Abbey Road Studios.

The production team are putting out a call to anyone going to Supersonic Festival 2010 who would like to be in the film. They are particularly interested in hearing from anybody…

77 BOA DRUM (Boredoms)


On 07/07/07 at 7:07pm, Japanese group Boredoms, orchestrated a performance by 77 drummers at Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, NYC.  Hisham Akira Bharoocha put out an email inviting drummers to apply for a place in the performance and out of the 3000 replies, 77 were chosen, including Andrew WK (drummer no 57), David Grubbs (drummer no 23) and Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale (drummer no 77).  The players were positioned in a spiral that trailed from a circular stage where the principal Boredoms members – Yozoro (drummer no 1), Yoshimi (drummer no 2), Sen (drummer no 3) were situated together with Eye (0) playing electronics, a seven-necked guitar and conducting the ensemble.  This is the screening of Jun Kawaguchi’s simply shot but effective documentary of the performance, complete with behind the scenes rehearsal footage, interviews, and, of course, lots of footage of the performance itself.  Come and experience the power of this momentous musical landmark.

There are also a series of shorts from the Thrill Jockey discography, which will feature new videos from Pontiak, Future Islands, Oval, Imbogodom and Dustin Wong.
