Spotify playlist for Supersonic 2011

...

Hello folks. My name’s David and I’m the Marketing intern for Supersonic 2011. I’m based in Manchester so I have the dubious pleasure of getting to know the M6 in intimate detail over the next few months. One of my first jobs has been to put together a Spotify playlist for artists performing at this year’s festival. It’s been great to check out some fantastic acts – hope you enjoy listening. Personally I’m excited about Skull Defekts (their current record ‘Peer Amid’ with Daniel Higgs is superb), Wolves in the Throne Room, Nathan Bell and Bardo Pond. Cloaks are my newest discovery too. Liking them a lot.

Pharaoh Overlord

...

Fresh from their artist residency at Roadburn Festival, Supersonic are delighted to announce that both Circle and Pharaoh Overlord will join the festival bill.

Pharaoh Overlord are a self described “Stoner Rock” side project of Circle, but don’t go getting visions of Nebula and Kyuss in your head just yet: this is more like “Stoner Minimalism.” Pharaoh Overlord deconstruct the standard rock song creating vast soundscapes that stretch time and space. Riffs capable of moving mountains repeat endlessly and when the silence finally comes, it’s deafening.

Breach

...

The ‘Breach’ project is a series of live performances for voice and prepared sound.

One of the founding members of Napalm Death, and Scorn Nicholas Bullen was responsible for the invention of the Grindcores throat-shredding growls, Developed as a demonstrative companion to a text piece focused on strategies for ‘silencing’ language, the live performances utilise the human voice as a medium for exploring ways in which the voice itself can be used to undermine the codes which govern discourse.Multiple microphones, live sampling and electronic processing are used to capture, layer and transform the voice: breath, whispers, glottal tics, snarls, growls, wails and cries become a shifting soundfield of immersive drones, radiator vibrations, rhythmic pulses and shards of noise denuded of linguistic content.

Barn Owl

...

Evan Caminiti (guitars, vocals) and Jon Porras (guitars, vocals, drums, harmonium) met in San Francisco in 2006 and immediately started playing music together. Over the next four years, the two gradually sculpted a vast collection of hazy desert sky meditations – ominous, barren expanses of music for desert walks at dusk, and dark, pastoral passages embellished with psychedelic and atmospheric wash. Engaging throughout, every moment contributes to an overall feeling of mysterious desert expanse and a sonic narrative that unfurls like a cinematic metaphysical western.

Several releases on labels such as Thrill Jockey, Root Strata, Digitalis, Not Not Fun, Blackest Rainbow and Important Records.

Barn Owl will be performing a special AV set for Supersonic 2010  – John Davis will be contributing Super 8 films to the set. See his work here –

Demons (with Sick Llama)

[jwplayer config=”video mainpage” playlistid=”847″]Demons features Nate Young, the founding member of Wolf Eyes, and have evolved from a synthesizer duo into a Visual Music trio with the incorporation of video artist Alivia Zivich.

“This duo from Detroit made the scariest damn noise album of 2007 with Evocation . Far from the typical free-for-all inanity that dominates the noise scene, Nate Young and Steve Kenney create sounds that are more in line with Carl Zittrer’s horror movie soundtracks” Blood Sausage

Necro Deathmort

[jwplayer config=”video mainpage” playlistid=”897″]

Having equal passion for electronic and extreme music, and motivated to fill the glaring gaps in their record collections, Cookson and Rozeik began recording material under the name Necro Deathmort in 2007

The duo take their favourite aspects of doom, drone, electronica, ambient, hip-hop and dance music, and force it all together into something altogether more…Necro.  This is not ‘doom meets electronica’: this is an organic sound that owes little to current musical trends, and everything to the music that originally inspired it’s creators – this is Necrotronic…A maelstrom of dirty beats, supernatural atmospheres, agonising guitars and crushing low end.

Although Eagle Twin is a very new entity, its helmsman Gentry Densley is no stranger to innovative, heavy music.  Densley was the musical visionary and leader of the legendary Jazz, Prog, Rock, Metal, Hardcore group Iceburn from 1991-2001.

In order to disseminate his majestic and mountainous riffs in the present day he enlisted massively behemoth skinsman Tyler Smith. The drums conjure a repetitious mantra that is eerily infectious.
