On Saturday 18th July we welcome THE NONE for a curated hometown throwdown at the Castle & Falcon, bringing together a celebration of Birmingham’s music community with Machiavellian Art, Monoxide Brothers and Not Soup joining the bill.

THE NONE are a band of lifelong musicians. Comprising of Birmingham and Supersonic Recordings own Kai Whyte (Blue Ruth, Youth Man) on vocals, bassist Gordon Moakes (Bloc Party, Young Legionnaire), guitarist Jim Beck (Cassels) and drummer Chris Francombe (Frauds), they make an uncompromising vision of noise rock with melody at its heart, channelling the spirit of The Jesus Lizard, Silverfish and Unwound. The band formed at the start of 2023 and bonded over hours in the rehearsal room – making noise, discussing shared obsessions, and, most importantly, playing together. The anonymity of their name reflects a creative approach which favours egoless experimentation and open collaboration. This ethos, the combined decades of music making, and the unique musical identities of all four members can be clearly heard in the art they create.

MACHIAVELLIAN ART

Machiavellian Art emerged from overlapping circles of punk, noise, and general disillusionment. The group writes by instinct, not design. Pressure systems, fractured basslines, and scraped guitar shapes forming around whatever anxiety is leaking out at the time. Some of it becomes structure. Some of it doesn’t. The music sits in the space between overload and erasure, a response to the constant barrage of information, distraction, and modern control systems. Grit, repetition, dead channels, brief flashes of melody trying to break through. Nothing resolves cleanly. Machiavellian Art document the feeling of living inside the machine as it grinds on.

MONOXIDE BROTHERS

Monoxide Brothers are a Birmingham-based electro-punk and experimental noise duo, known for raw, beat-driven live sets with sharp synths and intense rhythms. Emily Doyle (she/her, synths & beats) and Sophie Hack (she/her, vocals & synths) make up the duo. Their EP Manic Pixie Dream Pop, released last November, is a cathartic collection with one eye on the crumbling walls of Britain’s economy and the other on the social injustices seeping into its streets. The duo uses their songs to navigate everything from the daily realities of male violence and misogyny to the trials and tribulations of eating sandwiches and sending emails.

NOT SOUP

NOT SOUP are an unassuming 4-piece hailing from the Birmingham underground scene. These experimentalists have their toes in multiple genres to create their own hard to place and distinctive sound using blend of complex time signatures, disorientating riffs and lightly humorous and surreal lyrical imagery. NOT SOUP are gaining a cult following for their mind-bending live performances and unpredictable experimental sound.
